Is it too early for paint?

We built this house about 5 years ago, and whenever I want to change something, my husband's response is, "We had this house custom built. We can't just paint over things now." It's not the comment that bothers me, but it's the fact that he gets into my head! Maybe he's right. My dilemma? My kids' bathroom.
I went with all white, because well, it's my absolute favorite color. I just love a white room. However, I've really been getting into black cabinets now, and I love how it breaks up the room a bit. Here's the bathroom. Keep in mind, my camera is crappy.

And here it is without the bath mat. Grrr. I usually have a long, black rug in there (washing it) and I have my kids names embroidered on towels that go on the black scrolly towel bar (drying them).
While the decor isn't what I'm looking for in the pictures below, I DO love the black cabinets. Take a look.
I also love the black framed mirror. I see it done on HGTV all the time, and they act like it's so easy it doesn't even deserve a tutorial. Uh...hello? I need a tutorial on how to make a peanut butter sandwich. I like the look.

This is not a bathroom (uh, can you tell?), but this is one of my all-time favorite kitchens (Rate My Space). I am madly in love with every single detail of it. It will be my inspiration for our bar area in the unfinished basement that will probably never get finished unless we win the lottery.
So, what do you think? It's been 5 years, it's just a little paint, black is still a classic color--right? Am I messing with a good thing? Do I need to take the decorative plunge?

Black is classic. It think it will compliment the bathroom nicely. And, since they are already painted, you can always paint them another color later.

I say paint. I like color in bathrooms. I don't know why, but white bathrooms irritate me. I think it would flow with the rest of your house more if it was custom painted a color you prefer.

I say go for it, it doesn't matter how long you've been there:) I'd love to hear your husband's response to that:):) I think the black would look awesome, especially with your accessories AND THEN I'll now how it will look before I attempt painting MY OWN cabinets. Come on, be the guinea pig for me! I have TOTAL confidence in your decorating/redecorating abilities:)

My husband used to tell me the same thing. But once he saw how much better the rooms or cabinets looked, he stopped saying that. I would totally paint the cabinets. I think it will make a bit difference. And it's only paint. If you don't like it, paint over it. But I have black cabinets and I love them, so I say PAINT!

I just stumbled across your blog and I had to laugh because I'm REALLY into black right now. Just last weekend I painted my kitchen table and chairs black. I LOVE them!!
(there are pictures on my blog)
I say GO FOR IT!!
And really...if you don't like it? Just paint them white! ;o)

Black all the way! But then again I am binging on the black paint these days.
My husband and I are framing in our bathroom mirror in the next day or two. I love the look so I told him it needed to be done.

I'll post pictures soon. Should I do a tutorial on it as we go? I'm like you, I need step by step instructions for things that I want to make.

:)Rachel.

Too bad I read this question , I never second guess painting um anything , its paint , the worst thing that could happen is you tire of it , then you paint again , I have painted the cupboards in my bath 1st grey , nice , and now white, lovely, we have only been here 5 yrs and twice I have painted both bath cupboards, I love the black look , Flipping Out has turned me on to that , go for it , it will look smashing.
What does your kitchen look like??
What's the likelyhood you will become unbored of what you have???

i think you should totally do it just as soon as you can talk your hubby into it. i can relate with the frustration of talking them into it though. our dining room table is a handmedown and it has seen better days. i've been desperate for months now to paint it and our chairs black and i JUST got the go-ahead from him. ultimately he's worried about what will happen if it doesn't turn out right, so he kept arguing that we should just wait and buy one that is already black. WHAT???? my arguement was that if it already looks crappy, it won't look crappier just because i paint it black, even if i do a bad job painting it black. so, yeah, that took a while. i can't wait to be finished with it (w/2 girls under 3 these projects come slowly in our house though!)

I painted my bathroom cabinets black. I like the look a lot, but it does show toothpaste splatters and everything! My cabinets were old and UGLY and so painting them was an improvement.
My advice to you would be to be careful and do A LOT of prep work. You have a beautiful custom finish now. Did the painter use a latex or oil?
I think I would choose to put color on the walls first and then decide if you still want black cabinets.

I think you should definitely go for it! I love the idea. Black is so "in" right now. The only thing I would consider, is how hard would it be years down the road when you decide to make another change? The black might be hard to cover with any other color. Keep us updated!

I love the black and I don't think it is too early to paint. When we built our first house, dh refused to paint the walls because it was "new" paint. I kept telling him the builder leaves the wall white so you can do what you want. I finally got paint a few years into it. I say, paint them!

Go for it Chris!!! Black is classic. It never gets old!!
Can't wait to see what you do:)

i am a little biased when it comes to painting anything. i will always be in favor of it. lol. always. we built our house 7 years ago and i am estimating i have painted each room at least twice. hubby doesn't mind as long as i am not asking him to help me paint again. the black is so classy...go for it!

Just wanted to pop in and say...if you decide NOT to paint, it will be okay too. I think your bathroom looks beautiful as is.

oh yeah I'd say go for the paint, if you don't like it paint it back! love your blog, can't remember how I found you but I'm inspired to get off my chair and do something, gotta love that!!

Maybe while you are talking the hubby into the paint you can change out the mirror to two black framed mirrors. Small steps may work better for him.

Forget the dh ...rofl. Paint is relatively inexpensive..and if you are willing to do the work..why not? I love black too! It will warm the space up. I had to laugh about the cake...sooo sorry it happened but it sounds like something that happened to me. Very cute cake by the way! cherry

I love the black cabinets! I think you should go for it. You can always change them back if you don't really like them ( I have a feeling though that you will)!

Your bathroom decor is really classy. Your blog is really fun to read and I enjoy it.

Oh I'm not a good paint person. You know Rhoda from Southern Hospitality has some posts on painting furniture black. She gives step by step instructions.

I think you should do it! It will really create a good focal point in an otherwise white room - it will make everything else stand out and look better too. I love the idea! Paint! Paint! Paint! and then post so we can see it!
p.s. I am new to your blog but hope to become a frequent visitor -thanks for sharing!

I think black cabinets in that bathroom would look GREAT. I'm getting ready to paint my master bathroom cabinets black or dark brown. I can't decide which to go with. Oh! And one of the first things my husband did when we moved into our house was frame out the bathroom mirrors. I hate the look of a mirror glued to the wall.lol It took him an hour and a few cuts on his table saw. Looks 1000% better.

You know me...paint anything and everything. Black all the way. Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black is scrumptious. My island and linen cabinet in my bathroom are black. All of my interior doors are black and the trim in my powder room is black. And did I mention that I LOVE them! Good Luck:)

Paint it! Black cabinets would look great in that room. I am currently working up the nerve to paint our kitchen cabinets. Also, I have one of those big wall mirrors in our full guest bathroom and I'm planning on framing it. I don't think it will be too hard (a little molding, a little glue, and stick it straight on the mirror) but I'll be looking for Rachel's instructions. Ha!

I visit your page often and I LOVE it! I know how you feel about wanting some change but those are really nice cabinets. Why dont you change out the hardware and splash some color on the walls first.

Thank you for all the helpful information with my blog, I finally figured out how to do it!!
Also, thanks for all the best wishes for the wedding...planning is such a stressful part, but I can't wait!! Love your blog too! =)

Do it! Do it!

When you were describing what you wanted to do I wasn't sure. But now that I see the picture I'm convinced. I thought the black cabinets would be too much against the white walls but I was wrong. I love it!!!!

I definitely want to read more on that blog soon. BTW, rather nice design this blog has, but don’t you think it should be changed from time to time?
