How's that for a catchy title? Okay. I've been wanting to make these for a long time, but I'm too cheap to pay full price for...well...anything. I waited ever-so-impatiently for stamps to go 1/2 off, and when they did, I snatched up a bunch!
I went to my local Lowe's to pick up some tiles, and I found some for .14 cents!!! Of course, I didn't pick up enough, but I'll get some more later. This batch was to play around and figure out how bad I am at stamping.
Do you want a tutorial? Well, you're getting one anyway. I started out with .14 cent tiles. You don't have to have those, but it makes it much more fun if you do. I used a bunch of different rubber stamps and a stamp ink called "Staz on". It's supposed to be for non-pourous surfaces--such as .14 cent tile.
Here is my madness in the making. Because I'm a bad tutorializer (yup, made up), I didn't take pictures of the stamp pad or the backs of the tiles.
Basically, I just used some felt dots that I had laying around the house. I guess you could cut some cork or felt for the whole back, but that seemed like a lot of work to me. I cut some cream paper into squares, stamped on them, then rubbed some of the ink from the stamp around the edges to "age" it.
I chose some coordinating ribbon, waved my magic wand, and called it good. This picture's a little blurry, but I thought you might like to see the detail of the script. So pretty.

Love them! Think I will do these too....so I can buy the love of my daughter's special ed teachers!!
Thanks for sharing!
They turned out nicely! I made a bunch for c-mas presents last year. I never made any for myself though..I need to do that. LOL
I like the stamping. We use the adhesive backed drawer liner cork for the backs of the tiles.
Too cute! Love them. Katrina :)
Love them...and love your blog!!!
They turned out GREAT! That price is gonna be hard to beat too!
Very cute! I made some for Christmas gifts and they loved them!
Adorable!!! I love the colors and effects you chose and of course the Fleur is a favorite!!!
*Sigh* Well add this to my list of "Ways to copy Chris"
Maybe I have a problem? Probably, considering every step you take, every move you make, I'll be watching you..Wait what? But I mean, it's not that bad if you don't think about it so much.. :)
Anyways, they're very cute- I saw them around Christmas time and planned on making them but you know how that goes! :)
Those are so cute!! Love em! You did a great job on them.
You should sell them on Etsy...those would make great gifts. I am sure you could sell them and make a profit! They would be a perfect wedding shower gift.
That is fantastic! I did your hand sanitizer one for Valentines and the teachers LOVED it!!
Thanks! I might do this next!
Those are amazing! I may have to start a stamp collection :)
where did you buy the stamps???
LOVE it!
I've never tried stamping. But I think I'll give it a try.
Those look great!
The tiles are awesome and look so easy to make. What a great gift!!!
I can't wait to try those. Thanks for sharing. Love & blessings from NC!
I really, really like these. Wow! Good work!
Love the tutorial. Great idea. I'm going to have to make some of these!
That is such a GREAT idea!! I love it! Such a great gift idea!
I'm going to try that for presents!
Wow, these are great! Where do you find that ink? Will it smudge when it gets wet? I've been neededing some cute coasters...cool!
These are wonderful! I think they are a unique gift idea that is so much better than a mug. Great job!
Very cute...I made some of these at Christmas!
I love your tag and bow, too!

They are lovely! Anyone would feel pretty special to be on the receiving end of these! QUESTION: Is that script actually a stamp? Is it a smaller stamp that you repeated several times on one tile? I love it! I am intrigued.
Love it!! I think I may try it.
Did you spray them with any kind of sealer? I made some at Christmas for my kids with their last names and large initial on them and didn't spray them and they ran. I had to re-do them. :( But then they were fine! I love the script ones!!
Love them! Thanks for another great idea...as if I need more on my 'to do' list. Can't wiat to make them.
Okay, sista! This is creepy, have you seen my post for today? Do-do-do-do...
love that idea... I can't wait to try it!
Just so you know Oprah, my love is more expensive to buy. (But you can throw in a set of super cute coasters as well)
Love, Gayle
Now excuse me while I think of peoples love that I don't really need but might be able to acquire for $2.00 - it's better to have friends than enemies, right?
these are super! Hope I can remember them come Christmas! :)
Those are adorable! Love this idea!
I love your tutorials! I can't wait to do this project.
Thanks for sharing.
Tjose are soo cute. I esp. like the script one. Def. gonna try my hand at these! :)
Those are great! I've done the tile/coaster thing before, but never with the stamps - they look terrific!
Now that is a fun project that is totally in my price range!
-Jill
They are spiffy hun!
I printed off directions years ago and just never got around to making them. I need to though~ they are darling!
These look great! I did similar coasters with pics of my son for Christmas, but I love the stamp idea as well!
Chris~Those turned out fantastic!
So, that ink is permanent? Did you have to seal the tiles after they were stamped?
You did a very good tutorial!
You are so funny! How I wish I was funny. But I'm not. But this comment is not about me, it's about you! Great job...even if you're not a great "tutorializer." And there is nothing wrong with buying the love of fellow employees. ;-)
what a great idea! And great tutorial. I love how you show us all these "bargain" ideas!! :)
Another great idea. Very cute and I love your stamps.
Darn you!! Every time I read one of your posts, I add something else to my list of things that I absolutely must have or the world might end. I just blogged the other night about a new project I want to start working on, but I think I might do this first! Winter's almost over, my mitten and scarf box can wait!!
I also did these...back in September. Got the idea from Susie Harris of Bienvenue.
One tip for ya...I found that spraying them with an inexpensive sealer is a great idea. I used a set for a while and it started to smudge. Staz-on doesn't always "stay on" :o) Also, they look really cute if you can find the pads that are black and thicker. I used those on the sets that I gave to family for Christmas and they just raved over how cute they were. I ended up getting some stamps with Bible verses on them; those were a big hit as well. Great for Bible studies!
Here is the link from when I did them http://rustycottage.blogspot.com/2008/09/inspiration-from-susie.html
And here is Susie's link http://susieharris.blogspot.com/2008/08/coasters101.html
Love them.

I have to do this project. Thanks for the idea.
I love your blog... and your coasters! Keep the great ideas coming.
You did an AWESOME job on them! I made tons of sets at Christmas for everyone. I used the tumbled tiles. I still have to make myself a set!
Great job, I've been wanting to try those! I'll have to check Lowe's for those .14 cent tiles!
Cute project. I have tons of tiles that I got free. They are white and glossy, so I don't think they'd turn out the same.
They turned out fantastic :)
I like this idea. You really should take care of those secretaries!! (I'm one myself, haha)
Have a great day, and thanks for the tutorial.
Sandra
Love them! And a fantastic idea.
Love this idea!
I hadn't thought about giving them as gifts like this. I had the girls make their own (travertine left over from backsplash, paint pens, felt feetie pads) so they'd use them on their desks...but this would be a perfect grandparents gift :)
I did these and gave some away for Christmas. I love the one with the writing. :)
These would be the perfect handmade gift for a birdal shower I'm going to on Saturday! Thanks for the inspiration!
do you think you might sell those? I'd be a customer if you did!
What a great idea!! Off to Home Depot for tiles...
What a great project, these are too cute!!
I love these. They are beautiful!
You are simply AMAZING! Thank you for another useful easy gift idea!
Those are really cute!
Love this idea! I linked it to my post today -- I'm going to attempt them this weekend!
How Cool! I've never heard of Staz On but it's perfect for this project! I'm going out and looking for some now!
This is your MOM... I want those for a gift!!! HE HE HE HE yes I really do. Love them....was a little confused about you stamped the paper first? them rubbed the paper on the tile? which comes first. Great Job... love them...
Mom
PS.... these are sooo good, you should SELL THEM...
Mom
YUM!! Those tiles are to die for. I've been wanting to try this for a long time!

I made these a couple of years ago - if you bake the tiles in the oven after you stamp them with StazOn ink then they won't run and you own't have to seal them. I love the napkin idea though - definitely going to try those for something new. Also - the hand sanitizers were a hit!
I love this idea! I already have the staz-on and a zillion stamps so I am going to make some of my own...This is such a great way to personalize coasters, and I have a thing for coasters anyway so yay!
Thanks for the tip!
I want to make some of these too...yours turned out great!
Did you seal or set your tiles so they don't run or bleed when drinks are set on them?
This project is so awesome! I think even I could do it. Thanks. ;-)
~Heather
Great pics of the tile coasters. Your inspiration gave me the extra little "umf" I needed to give them a try, and I am so glad I did b/c they turned out great! I posted a few pics of mine on my blog. If you have a spare minute I would love for you to take a look:o)
You are one of my favorite bloggers...thanks for sharing!
Holly Ann
Wow, nice coasters! They're very fragile though, right? Because I remember my mom receiving something like this as a souvenir for a wedding she attended. But instead of tiles, it was made up of glass, almost like a jalousie for windows. It's very heavy, and fragile, so I'm scared of using it!
I love your ideas. The one who commented that you should bake the tiles after stamping them....How long do you bake them for?
Do you sell your creations anywhere? You should really consider starting your own home business if you don't have one already.
Keep up the lovely work.
I made some coasters a while ago, and they turned out just fine. But someone mentioned they 'cook' them in the oven for a little bit. Did you do that with these? I haven't had a problem with fading...but just wondered what is best. Thanks! (I am going to make a few sets for an upcoming benefit auction...so want them to be great!)
