Bloggers Come Forth!

Boy, do I have some questions for you. You see this desk below?

IMG_1983Well, it used to be my blog spot. However, since I got this new handy dandy laptop, I haven’t been in that room since. I’m serious. I walked in there the other day, and my desk had painted itself white with dust. Hmm…

IMG_1140 What a shame, right? Over 100 square feet of space that never. gets. used. So….you know that started to get my wheels turnin’. I need a craft room. I had planned on it being in our basement that doesn’t seem to be finishing itself.

off

The only “problem” is that I don’t want my craft room to look anything like a craft room. I called Candice to see if she could come make it look like this one she did, but she’s busy with some “show”. This space is just dreamy!! The tailored couch, the cool/calm colors, that rug…oh my!

divine_design_5

So here’s what I was thinking….

img44l

Pottery Barn has the corner desk unit that I want. However, it’s extremely over-priced. Not just expensive, mind you…extremely OVER-priced.

pb bedford

JCPenney has an identical unit that fits the bill—literally. However, I need to know if anyone has this. Is it made well? Does it look good? The reviews on it are pretty good, but I don’t necessarily want to buy junk just so I can spend less money.

jcp modular

I’m definitely going white, but here’s another pic.

AAAADMqEjIMAAAAAABKvugSo, what do you think? Even if you don’t have it, does it look worthy? All of this is contingent upon selling the desk already in there. It’s such a beautiful piece, and it’s only a year old. If it doesn’t sell…it won’t matter. But if it DOES……

Yes it's worthy! Looks great... go for it!

Ballard Design has a corner unit virtually identical to that one but I'm not sure how the price is in comparison. You should check it out.

That looks fantastic! Isn't it great when you can get the look you're after for a fraction of the price? Good luck! :)

I bet you could find some two drawer file units on Craigslist, paint them, and then use hollow core doors as tops. In fact, that's such a good idea, I might do it also. LOL. I love that Candice room.

How fun...a whole new room to design and shop for and decorate! When we first moved into our new house with a study I was totalling planning to splurge and buy the PB Bedford corner desk and side desk. However, I went to a local furniture store and found something else that I liked ALMOST as much but for much less $. It is the Kathy Ireland Tribeca collection. Since then I have seen the Bedford collection on craigslist a few times. You might have some luck with CL as well. There is no doubt that that desk with suit your craft room perfectly!!!

That looks perfect! You go girl!

Yes, go for it! I've purchased a few big items from Penneys and they have held up GREAT. I've been totally pleased with all of it. You could make that room so cool!

how much are they both?

MAKE YOUR OWN!!! I have loved that desk forever and am going to have my dad build me one...one of these days! ;D

You can buy the filing cabinets and just make a counter top.

Amanda@Imperfectly Beautiful said...

Definitely worthy! You could add those adorable metal book plates to the drawers and...Voila...the same. Maybe even rough up the edges with a little distressing action...fabulous! I know whatever you do will be PERFECT. Also...that room by Candice Olson is AMAZING and LIFE CHANGING. I'm in love!

Why don't ya stay with the old desk (great storage), paint it white and then add the filing cabinet looking additions to it. I don't even want to show anyone my craft room..it's a craft in itself.

LWLH said...

I say go for it..I think it looks legit! :)

LOVES IT! My SIL has that desk from JCP but it's black and she talks about it ALL THE TIME. I say go for it.

Kelli said...

Yes...worthy. Tons of surface space which is what you'll need to be crafy. And tons of storage space. Good plan!

I don't have THAT desk. But, I did buy my dining room table on sale through JC Penny 3 years ago. It's very heavy and sturdy. I'm pleased with it.

Stacey @ The Blessed Nest said...

I love it! But I also love that fantastic desk you already have! I'd paint it white & on the right side add a white painted door over filing cabinets to get that L-shape that you like! Add some cool new hardware, and you're set! Lots of places to store your crafty goodness :)! And inexpensive too!!

I don't have experience with that exact piece but I know a friend of mine gets tons of furniture from JCPenney and loves it!

Love, Love, Love the white. Did I say I love the white. If you are looking to save money you might want to consider purchasing several white file cabinets and having the desk top cut is size and painted white, you can even angle the cut for the corner.

I love the white. I think it looks great and I love JC Penney, so it would probably be fine. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I have purchased several furniture pieces from Penney's, and they are all good quality. I haven't had any problems with their things, so I would definitely say go for it, buy the Penny's desk! :)

Kacey said...

Options! Options! I am sure the one from Penny's is jst fine. I just thought I should let you know, I own the exact severly over priced desk from Pottery Barn. I got it back in the day before kids and me & MasterCard were BFFs. LOL Even though it is expensive, I have had it for 7 years and it has survived 4 moves. It is super sturdy and really well made. So, over priced? Yep! Well made and super sturdy? Yep! Yep! You'll have it for a long time if you decide to make the investment. I plan on keeping it forever and just buying a new desktop when th ekids decide to stop coloring on everything. ;D

I'm looking for a piece just like that to make a home office spot in my kitchen. Where are you again?

Chris, take a look at the Coastline units from Target. I have those in my scraproom and they are very sturdy, very much like the PB ones & they also have the corner units.

I have that same white desk from JC Penney (bought because I loved the Pottery Barn one, too)! I'm new to reading your blog and don't know a whole lot about you, but here's my experience: I've got a DH and two little girls (almost 7 and almost 3) and that thing gets dirty. They put their feet on it, climb on it, etc. And these are pretty gentle little girls. It does clean off easily, though. My biggest beef is that the top edge has chipped off a little bit, just from normal use (we've had it almost a year). It's very sturdy and well-made. No problems with shipping and easy to put it all together (it's mostly put together, you just have to put the top piece on). The drawers still smell strongly new when you open them. It's a great desk and I'd recommend it!

I forgot to say that I've got the three drawer piece, the CPU storage piece, and the desk top piece with keyboard tray.

Hey thanks for stopping by my blog and all of the nice comments! we DO have a lot in common- you forgot one thing to add to the list-- -I'm a teacher too! although I recently "retired" to be a SAHM.

anyway I LOVE LOVE LOVE your taste! the candice O room is beyond tasty. i vote you use it for an inspiration and look for goodies on craigs/antique stores/garage sales/ etc.

I have a craft room and repurposed some things. I am like you-- i want a craft room that doesn't look so "crafty". I bought 3 science lab tables and sold one of them with all the chairs which means i actually made money on the deal (like you did with the table/chairs- loved that!). I painted them and found the top to a cabinet on craigs. you can see it here

i can't wait to see what you come up with-- i know it will be OUTSTANDING whatever it is!

I've eyed that JCP desk too--but don't have it to give opinions on. BTW, where did you get your old desk from? I love that and it is just what I'm looking for.

I LOVE that desk! I am so envious that you have a whole room that you can do with whatever you please! I would kill for another room added on to our house!

I like the JCP option. Once upon a time, I found a great corner desk at an estate sale on the cheap. It now lives over at my sister's house because our apartment is too small for it. But, some day, I will get it back. Anyway, you might want to do a weekend or two of looking before taking the plunge.

I love the look you're going for!

i love the idea of buiding it on your own, but in my case the ideas coming to fruition is a problem

I would totally go for it- I've always loved that Pottery Barn desk!

And I LOVE that pillow by your desk in the second picture- where'd you find that?!

I've been plotting how I can kick my kids out of their playroom and claim it as my own little craft haven. Looking forward to see what you do, so I can glean some ideas!

Love the desk! I agree that the PB version is painfully pricey, but the JCP one is truly a much more reasonably priced contender.

LOVE Candace and the room you speak of (via photo) is so delightful that I want to squeal.

I'm nearing the finishing phase of building "my" room and I'm most excited to see some paint go on the wall. Oh the whites that will fill this room will be heavenly.

MY best friend has the JC Penny one. It's awesome. When I saw it I yelled at her for buying the pottery barn one, and that's when she let me in on the secret. GET IT!! It's adorable in person.

Lisa said...

Love all your ideas! If push comes to shove you can always paint the desk you have white and trick it out to hold all your craft supplies.

Victoria said...

Love the ideas. I have also been eyeing that Pottery Barn desk for years. You might see if there is a JC Penney surplus store anywhere around you. Our JC Penney furniture surplus store in Atl had that desk unit for way less!

I would track down Candice and inform her she has just got to help! Or Ballards....surely they would understand your predicament! bloggers are sitting on pins and needles needing real help to everyday blogging situations! Surely they understand! That room by Candice is gorgeous...I would never leave!
Blessings,
Debbie

What glorious photos you posted. I have to mop up some drool. I'm crossing my fingers that you sell your desk so you can post about your lovely new craft room.

LOVE the corner desk idea! I have never had a problem with stuff I got at JC Penny. So I have all the confidence in the world that this desk will work for you.

Looks great black or white!! Check out Target too. A lot of times they have PB knockoff types of furniture. The one I have is good quality. Can't wait to see what you do with your new room:) Are you selling your desk on Craigslist? Bet you could get a decent amt. for it!!

Hope you had a great Mother's Day and LOVE your neighbor welcome basket. Hope they are really cool people and appreciate having you for a neighbor:)

I love it. I think you should go for it. I have always had good luck with Penneys stuff. Never had any problems.

I once looked at the Pottery Barn set for a client. It is made from MDF. With heavy crafting within two years it would look like it went a few rounds with Mike Tyson.
You are correct in that it is EXTREMELY overpriced for what it is.
It just looks so good! :)

I have the jc penny stuff. I have the desk, the file cabinet and I have also bought the mudroom cabinets that my kids use everyday and they are rough with stuff. We also ordered a whole wall system not to long ago for my son that is the drawers, boxes, etc..for video games and such.
I would highly recommend them. They take some time to build but I did it all alone.

You know I don't have it, but I know another blogger that does have it: http://www.dawnmcvey.typepad.com/

I have this desk!! I love it, I got it on clearance and I am pleased with it. I purchased 2 filing cabinets in white and had my fiance make a desk top. They were shipped to me wrapped and protected, fully assembled. I just had to screw on the draw pulls. Considering the price, you really cannot go wrong. Get it!

something great (and crafty) that you could do is make your own desk. i remember seeing an article in a magazine back in my college days (a loooong time ago) where a girl found two dressers that were the same height and width and purchased some particle board; paint it all the same color and attached it to the dressers. instant desk!! this might allow you more creative freedom with what you want to accomplish.
