Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

OH, what to do when a new neighbor moves in.  Do you bake them some bread?  Cook them a meal?  Give them a high-five at the mailbox?  Pretend you didn’t know they moved in and proceed as if nothing is new?

NewNeighborsWelcome It took me a minute to decide, but I pulled something out of the air.  We’re talking a little shady here, people, but bear bare Bayer with me.  Remember these?IMG_5198

As it turns out, apparently when you make something, it actually makes SENSE to give it away.  At the very least, said project should be out for people to enjoy.  Mine, however, has been sitting in a storage container.  On my dining room table.  So, I took them out.

IMG_5201

Next, I typed up some local phone numbers of places that they might need on a more regular basis. I also added a “recommendation section” of some wonderful downtown places to visit (If you do this, it’s best to put a little description of what it is.  You don’t want them thinking Rocky’s is a boxing gym).  Lastly, I included all the phone numbers of the neighbors in the cul de sac—especially if they need some sugar at 12AM or a cup of corn syrup at 11:30 at night.  I’ve heard that happens around here.  Dumb night time bakers!

IMG_5204

Then, in pure stalker form, I took a picture of their house.  Using my crazy photo skills, I added a “Welcome Home” banner at the bottom and framed it for them.  This way they can reflect on what their house looked like when they first moved in. I waited for that car to leave. Really.  It just wouldn’t.  I’m pretty sure it’s one of theirs.

IMG_5206

Put them all together with some homemade No Bake Cookies made at 10:26PM and VOILA!!  A “new neighbor” welcome basket.

IMG_5212

The paper doesn’t match the box, and it’s driving me nuts.  I was originally going to use a basket, but it didn’t work.  I’m changing the paper tomorrow.  Yes, that’s really how I am.

Ok, that is seriously the neatest most sweet neighborly thing I have ever seen! When we moved into our new neighborhood 4 years ago we didn't get so much as a hand thrown in the air! Love that basket idea! Thanks for sharing. :)

Such a sweet gesture! When I first moved to Texas (from Southern California) last year... I had a neighbor bring over freshly baked brownies to introduce herself. I was floored. I thought that only happened in the movies! haha... Your neighbors are going to love that you took the time to make them feel welcomed. Nicely done. :)

Kristi said...

Wow! My neighbors are good but none took the time to greet us with anything like THAT! I'll have to keep this idea in my future file!

Kristen said...

You are too sweet. I usually take a loaf of bread from this specialty bakery down the street. Now I feel like a loser. You should build me a house in your backyard so I can be your neighbor. I've seen all that extra land - come on, you know you want to! It would be fun - we'd get our laptops, meet in the middle and hang out to blog stalk.

That would've been funny if you had photo shopped in home and landscape improvements for them...

Anonymous said...

You are amazing! I usually just take over a batch of homemade bread or cinnamon rolls. Love the idea of printing out a list of phone numbers for them. Heck, I should make one for myself!

Such a great idea!! I usually do cookies, bread~something like that...but I love this idea! I might have to adopt it for the next move in! So clever! Oh...can I be your neighbor too? Everyone wants to live next door to you!!!

I, too, am a stalker and posting my first message on your blog. I've been watching you since V-day. My teachers love the sanitizers!!!! They think I foresaw the H1N1 virus (haha).

I would love to be your neighbor! Quick question - what would you do for a single guy that moved in next door? We may not have a lot common, but I do want to offer a nice gesture since my 4 kids will be making their presence known over the summer months. :)

THANKS!

Amber Filkins said...

You are seriously freakin awesome! So.......since we're Bff's and all, you wanna PRETEND I'm a new neighbor and send me an amazing welcome basket??

Oh, and I'm like *that* too. But I'm conflicted, because I love that paper, but I like the box too. What's a girl to do???

Seriously though, all of that stuff is AWESOME! That framed picture is genius too. So is that list. Oh, it's all wonderful!

Beth@The Stories of A to Z said...

OMG Chris! Will you be MY neighbor? I love it! What if you actually designed you neighbor's house and said on your blog that you want to move into theirs and ditch yours? Is it WAY too stalkerish to do something like this for them under those circumstances? (To see what in the world I'm talking about click on this post http://bethcrabtreehunter.blogspot.com/2009/05/my-evil-twin.html ) Also, I totally copied your coaster idea down to the sweet tags and mine are all sitting neatly in a container....on my kitchen counter...for the past several months. I've given lots away but I went a bit crazy in the stamping. Love your ideas girl! You have some mad skills.

Nada. Nothin'. But I'm not bitter. The cows were quite neighborly. They left us pies. Get it? Cow pies? {snort}

I am seriously going to do this the next time someone moves in. I'll be the one who starts a being neighborly tradition.

Maybe I'll include some lime tortilla chips.

Wow, what an incredibly thoughtful idea. When we moved to our house ago a year ago no one introduced themselves on the block. We even had a house fire with lots of fire trucks and a huge commotion and not one neighbor came over to see if we were ok. It's kinda sad. I'm definitely going to use your idea for an icebreaker, cause it's never too late to be friendly, right?

Thanks for you amazing post!

We're all good neighbors now though. But first impressions you know. ;)

This is the best EVER. What a great idea, you are so creative! The house across the street is for sale and now I am going to watching like a hawk to try and be the first one to welcome them to the neighborhood. My box would probably include a couple of less-stalkerish things. No offence! I just have a different personality. It would probably include cookies, home made bread, a bundle of home made thank you cards (because that is what I like to make), the local phone #'s list and a small bundle of cut flowers. I love the idea of giving it to them in a box or basket, because you always need organization tools when you move into a new home!
