One…last…project…

Well, tomorrow is the day.  I go back to work.  I’ve shed my share of tears already, and the nightmares about unruly students have begun.  Very normal, I’m sure.  Sooo, in a last ditch effort to get some summertime projects done, I present you with the hutch.

IMG_6780

My grandparents have recently moved in with my mom, and they told me to come over and take anything and everything that I want of theirs.  At first, it was quite daunting and sad for me.  Pieces of furniture and memorabilia that I had grown up with were now being “discarded” to me if I wanted.  After much re-assurance from my grandparents, I loaded up my SUV.

IMG_6778 I actually didn’t take this until the very last minute because I just didn’t think I’d have room for it.  But…it needed a loving home.  After 6 coats of paint WITH primer, this is what she looks like now.

IMG_7170Don’t mind any random mess that you might spot around the room.  The second it was semi-dry, I took pics.  The light in here isn’t the greatest, so I had no time to waste!

IMG_7176

I added some new handles to spiff her up a bit!  Nice, huh?

IMG_7210

Obviously, I’ve got one more set to put on the bottom doors.  Then, I’ve got lots of things to fill it with!  Can’t wait!

IMG_7225

Here’s her space.  I’m turning my office into a craft room, and this piece is just perfect for the room.  Now I just have to pick out some fabric for those chairs

IMG_7194

Come back in a couple of days, and I’ll show you how she looks with her jewelry on.  In normal words…how I decorated her.  In really normal words…how I decorated it.

OMG, Chris! This looks fantastic! I kept going back up to the "before" picture. It looks so good white. Love the new draw pulls, too. Looking forward to seeing how you doll her up. Have a good first day of school! : )

The hutch turned out to be so beautiful!!! It is so amazing what white paint can do to a piece. By the way, what kind of paint did you use? I am thinking that since the piece was larger, you may have used a brush-on paint, instead of spray paint. Thanks for sharing. Good luck with school. Love & blessings from NC!

It looks great. I have one in my attic and I don't know whether to be inspired or scared to death---SIX coats !!!! Did you have to sand it first?? Can't wait to see it all dressed up. I am sure it will make your grandparents happy to see it in your home! Good luck with school--hope you get great kids and even better parents :)

i have a similar hutch that my aunt gave me. Painting it is on my list of "to do's". I am inspired by this. I recently acquired my grandmothers table (that she had as long as I can remember) so I totally relate to how you felt taking this home. I plan to one day paint the table to match my hutch....not sure what my family will think about that!

Six in One Hand said...

Your grandparents will be so glad to see the hutch have new life.
Great Job!

You are so talented and have such a great eye for things!! I hope you have a great first day, too! I was wondering if you painted the hinges? They kind of looked like a dark brass color in the before pic and then looked a lot lighter in the afters.

If you can you should try etching the glass in the doors or faux etching if you want to switch up the look later. It looks really good with the white paint.

I think I have it's sister hutch in the collection..it was my husbands grandparents, so to him, it's an antique..it's probably JCPenney circa 1960, but you have inspired me. I just dried my hands of TSP waiting for it dry to hit the liquid sander. I can only hope mine turns out as nicely as yours! Really, 6 coats?
