Coasters and a Deal!

Well, the cat’s out of the bag.  Silhouette is being incredibly generous and giving away some of their machines throughout blogland.  Don’t we love them?  I’m going to be cruel and make you wait a couple more days before I do my giveaway.  This way, if you don’t win the other giveaways, you’ve still got mine!

Just to show you that I’m not allll mean.  I made a little housewarming gift for my girlfriend who just bought a brand new home!  Lucky girl, right?

IMG_1920

I, of course, turned to my new Silhouette for some help. I started out with these craft mirrors from Hobby Lobby.  They were 30% off, so that’s…well…less than $2.47 for two of them.

IMG_1910

I wanted to find just the right image to etch onto the glass, so I paid a whopping .99 cents for this flower.  LOVE.

IMG_1906

I used the adhesive vinyl, cut out the image, and applied it to the coaster. A little (expensive!) bottle of etching cream was applied. ETA: The etching cream is called Armour Etch, and it was $8.50 for 3oz.  It’s pricey, but I used very little. I imagine it will last quite a long time.

10 minutes later…voila!

IMG_1908

Here’s another picture ‘cause I think they’re that pretty, and it’s rather difficult taking a picture of a mirrored object!

IMG_1909

After simply slapping some cork on the bottom and wrapping some pretty ribbon around it, I now have a charming and personal gift for my friend!

IMG_1923 She’ll love them!  And even if she doesn’t, she’s nice enough that she’ll lie and say she does.  In the hopes of tiding you over until the giveaway, Silhouette is offering some FANTASTIC promotions for you, as well.  Just enter the code “sweet” once you place your order.

OK - what kind of etching cream did you use? I got some from Hobby Lobby a while back and I wasn't thrilled with the result! It turned out "ok" but I really wanted a deeper etch I guess. The contrast wasn't as good as what you got! Those are cute! Thanks for sharing! :D

I am a long time lurker but wanted to comment when I read the last anon comment.
First...I did not think it was a *crappy sample*. I think that this was adorable!

Second, if you are like me, my friends totally know how I talk and would know *threw on some cork* would NOT mean you were being cheap or doing something half assed.

If you are going to say something...NICE OR NOT....put your name on it. ~mutters blog troll~

These are adorable and I would love to be the friend getting them!

Oh Anonymous's of the world, you make my blood boil. Might I kindly direct you to #5 of this post http://www.thestoriesofa2z.com/2009/12/blog-unto-others-how-you-would-have.html

Chris, I LOVE these coasters and was hoping that you were giving some away to us!!! I'll gladly take the silhouette but if that doesn't work out, I'll take some coasters please :).

very cute!! i'm thinking of all the things i could do with one of those nifty machines!

Yes, I would like to know what kind of etching cream you used, too!

Those are adorable!!

Oh girls. I love that you run to my defense. It's why I love you. Anonymous "meanies" get no attention from me. I simply delete. There's a reason they don't give their names, and I find that creepy.

Moving on...the etching cream I used is Armoure Etch. It was $8.50 for a 3 ounces. Expensive, I think. However, it worked well, and I only used a tiny bit. Looks like it'll last a long time.

Good lord. Sorry for the errors above. Can you tell I was talking to my kids and typing at the same time? I'm lucky I didn't type, "No, you can't have a snack right now!" in there. :)

I have to get one of these thngs! I keep seeing all the wonderful things you ladies are making with them and I am INCREDIBLy jealous.

What a great idea! Those turned out super cute!

Hanneke Nelson said...

Good news! You can reuse your Armour Etch. Just scrape it off with a brush or little silicon spatula and put it back in the jar. A little goes a LONG way this time. Much friendlier on your wallet and the environment.

And I will be happy to take that silhouette off your hands when the time comes...

Don't you LOVE the etching cream? I now find myself in the dollar store or goodwill seeking out items I could use to etch! Great job!!

Oh, I want one of those! Why didn't Silhouette pick me to do a giveaway...why, oh, why?...

Whoa! Cute coasters!!

I tried etching some glass candle votives about a million years ago (okay, so it was only like 11 years ago, but still) and it didn't work at all! The etching cream just stunk up my whole house and burned my fingers. Me no likey! I've been afraid of using it ever since.

Glad yours turned out so nicely. :)

so cute! i have got to make some of these! for Christmas gifts for my son/dil/granddaughter, i etched some really pretty (and cheap!) glass mugs with stems (not sure what they're called) with their names and snowflakes. also etched a santa-cookie plate. they loved them.

hanneke already said what i wanted to say: scrape off the armour etch or etch-all after use and put it right back into the jar.

also, if you leave it on longer, it etches more. it'll never be "deep," but it will be more cloudy.

Hey Chris,
When I typed in "sweet" for the promo code, it only listed 1/2 of the great free items that you listed. You can email me at kwhorton at bellsouth dot com if there is anything else I need to do. Thanks so much!!!!

I love these coasters - what a great idea! I might try something similar using my frosted glass spraypaint. I've only tried etching cream once before and for some reason we didn't get along too well.

I just got my Silhouette last Saturday and I already hate it! Haha, not really! But it's a lot more difficult than I thought it would be!
