In Media Res

My students try to tell me that they will never use some of the Shakespearean terms that we talk about in class. There. I just proved them wrong.

That’s where we’re at, however. In the middle of things. The good news is that we went and picked up our new family member this weekend. Because I think Craigslist pictures are horrible, I thought I’d take some to show it off to you. Bee-u-ti-ful. It’s beyond my expectations.   IMG_3550

When my daughter saw that the “secret” desk pulled out, I thought her jaw was going to drop to the floor. It was totally worth the drive. IMG_3544

What the pictures don’t necessarily show well is that it’s pretty scratched up. It definitely needs some work, and I definitely can’t wait to tackle it!

For those of you who might expect the after pictures soon, let me forewarn you. I’m waiting for this baby. My birthday is on its way, and this is what I’ll be getting. I should probably tell my husband that.

I’m not stuck on this model (Porter-Cable PSH1 Gravity Feed from Amazon). As a matter of fact, if you have recommendations, PLEASE share them with me. I’m a newbie to this stuff, so any extra help is much appreciated!

Something else I could use some help with? How to take a true-to-color picture of this room! Egads! This is by far the biggest project I’ve taken on, and it’s a slow process to say the least. I’m doing all the trim work myself (see the handsome MDF baseboards below?).  I figure my kids will be able to use their bathroom again just in time for prom.

Your bathroom's off to a great start! Love the white! I'm wanting to tackle this project myself in the near future, starting with the mirror. My mirror has the clips as well. How did you work around those?

I am soooo excited to see what you do with the hutch. We "inherited" a hutch almost exactly like that one from the previous owners of our house. They live overseas & were supposed to send for it (& the matching dining room chairs)when their daughter got married. . . well their daughter is married now & we got no call. We've lived here over 5 years, so I'm just claiming it as ours now. Someday I'd like to do something with it!

I'm so happy to see that your cabinet even exceeded your expectations! Wow--that's going to be such a beauty! Aren't you glad you were patient?

And even if it takes a long time to get that bathroom done, I'd say it's worth it. You're creating a true Father-of-the-Bride kind of space there. I'm really impressed that you're doing that trim work yourself!

The other day, my middle son posted this as his Facebook status: "Frailty, thy name is woman." Of course, now I'm wondering what woman provoked that feeling in him. . . surely not his English teacher!?!

That is a gorgeous piece of furniture. Glad it was worth the drive.

LOve the prom comment!!!!

I wish I had the confidence to tackle something like that! I want to replace all the trim in our house, but not really sure how to do that. I can use the saw and all, but what about placement and shimming and calking????? SCARRY!!

The hutch is awesome!!!! My jaw dropped too!!! Can't wait to see what you do with it!!!

The cabinet has great lines. The bathroom trim looks fantastic. I would love to upgrade our builder basic wimpy trim but there is so much of it. Maybe I will start with just one small room.

I don't know where to start. I'm in love with that china cabinet. Want to sell it to me??? The kids bathroom trim and mirror trim looks really good. Great job Chris. You answered my question about what you would like for your birthday. I'm figuring $$,to go towards the paint sprayer. Good investment for you and all your many projects. Wish you had a picture of Olivia when she saw the secret desk drawer. Darn... Did you say what color your going to paint the cabinet? Love the design panels in the hutch doors. Bea ti ful..... Love mom
Call me I need to ask you some questions. Love... MOM

Gorgeous hutch! My house is so not hutch-worthy, it's a lot more casual and so I have a dresser/buffet which "fits" better I think, but I am always drooling over gorgeous hutches that fabulous bloggers are redoing. Can't wait to see the end product!
Also, the bathroom looks great. Love the baseboard too -- and if you get a tip on a true-to-life bathroom photography tip, please SHARE!! I just posted some pictures of my newly redone bathroom on my blog a week or so ago, and I cringe when I look at them, they are just not RIGHT.

My husband has an inexpensive sprayer from Harbor Freight & he absolutely loves it! He also has a fancier one that used to be his dad's (a former pro-painter), it's great for painting an entire house. For a quick furniture job though he likes the simple HF gun. No idea who makes it, but it was really reasonable.

The new hutch/desk is beautiful. I'm so jealous! I love to paint/refinish furniture, so my thoughts on the spray gun...
I think an HVLP (high volume low pressure) system is the way to go for painting furniture. They give a great finish with very little overspray. I have the Graco 2900 HVLP unit (bought from Lowes for around $100). Another good one is the Earlex spray station 5000 - which I just got to try out at a local wood shop. It's great, but a little pricier. They are both all-in-one, portable units (not just guns), so you don't need a big clunky compressor.
There are a lot of other good, affordable HVLP systems out there too. I've heard the Harbour Freight one is also nice.
Good luck! Can't wait to see the after pictures!

You're doing a great job on the trim and I love your new project!!!

I read a blog that can answer your questions regarding paint sprayers. She uses a Graco HVLP 7.0 but it is pretty expensive. The blog is
missmustardseedcreations.blogspot.com

Over on the right she has Ask Miss Mustard Seed FAQ Paint Questions and Answers. It has a little picture of a paint brush as the button. You can find a picture and info on her paint sprayer there.

Hope this helps; you'll become addicted to her blog if you haven't visited it before.

Good luck, I can't wait to see your finished project!

Wow! What an awesome find. I never seem to be able to find great stuff on Craigslist or at thrift stores. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

WOW! That piece is absolutely gorgeous! I cannot wait to see it finished. And I just had to laugh about your kids being able to use the bathroom for prom. HA! It will be done soon. And it's looking great so far.

That hutch is great. I love the accents on the glass. I'm curious what it's going to look like when it gets it's makeover. Man, the bathroom looks like a big job. You are brave for tackling it yourself- but looks like it's actually going very well:)

What exactly did you use for the walls in the bathroom? I have a 3 x 3 hole in my guest bathroom sheetrock from a pipe repair. I was thinking about this look for the walls and would love to know what you used. Thanks !

The bathroom looks great! Lucky you, paint gun! I love your secratary/desk thingy. It's so gorgeous!

Oh, what a gorgeous piece! I have never used a gun like yours. I have the Graco HVLP 7.0 spray system and it is awesome. It's very expensive, though, so it's only worth it if you paint a lot or sell items you paint.

Can't wait to see how it turns out.

I couldn't live without my paint sprayer. Lucky for me my hubby buys quality tools and he shares with me. I have a couple of MAC tools paint sprayers...the siphon type with a 1 qt. cup and also a gravity feed. I love them both. I'm assuming you already have an air compressor.
