Fall Planting

I got out of work and spent the evening cutting back all my summer blooms. Good bye Shasta Daisies, chow pink Lillies, and adios little yellow Coreopsis. As I ripped out all of my containers full of struggling plants, I thought about what I could do to "fall-i-fy" the outside of my house. It doesn't have to stop indoors, does it? I thought maybe something simple like this.

Maybe not. I don't think I could even afford the large pumpkin on the ground. So...that led me to look around. This container is a little rustic for my taste, but oh. my. LOVE it!
Here's one of my favorites. I love everything about it. Ornamental Kale and cabbages are definitely "in". And now they'll be "in" my containers this week!

I loved how Halloweeny this one looks! It's literally some white pumpkins, black ornamental grass, and some berries picked off some trees. How easy is that? I think it needs some cute little Halloween picks or a cute little witch stuck in there. I just might have to look into this...
It's so colorful, it seems like spring!
Another favorite. I love the tall grass, and the bundles of color underneath. I wrote this one down, so we'll see how badly I can hack up my version of it.
I notice not many people mention outside decor such as this. Outside of our usual pumpkins, etc., do you plant fall foliage? Is it possible in some of your more southern states? Perhaps this is a reward we get up here in Michigan--fall plants. Because (lest we forget) winter is on its way. I can't WAIT to show you pictures of that. :-(

Great pictures! I love the one with in the black container with the black grass. I never think about planting fall foliage (I had to go back to your post to see how to spell "foliage"...so lame). But, I think you have inspired me to check it out. I definately have the empty dirt spaces to give it a try.

Those are wonderful pictures! I love the ones with white pumpkins! I sprayed painted some small pumpkins white....my neighbor was watching me and thought I was crazy! I love lots of fall foliage sticking out! How fun!

p.s. at first, I thought that first picture was your yard!

I vote for the third one or the last one. I love both of them!!!!!

What? How much did you pay those kids to wear matchie sweaters and sit down for pictures? Is that on the back 50 acres of your yard? Are you like Marie A. with your own little village on your property? (Actually I was there and her village was quite lovely)

I LOVE the white pumpkins and the blackish grasses. Fall is so short here that I can't do much except some mums in pots. I did corn stalks one year but I was afraid mice would come. So just pumpkins in the flower beds mixed in with glowing bones for All Hallows Eve....cannot wait!

Is this even making sense? I'm tired.

You've inspired me... it's time to undo the planters on my front step and fall-ify them.

Great pictures!!! I'm itching to start outside decorating too, but I have a garage sale at my mom's this weekend, so I'm waiting to get past that!
Can't wait to see what you come up with!!!!

I love the ideas. At first, I thought the first photos was your backyard...I was VERY impressed, lol! I love that big pumpkin!

I always decorate my front steps. Some years I buy cornstalks and my son and I make a scarecrow and go all out. I'm not sure if I'll have the time or energy this year, but if I do, I will!

Sigh...winter. I hear ya girl! However, I do love when the first snows fall!

Loved the inspiration pics Chris. I was think about doing something on the front steps of our place. Too much work to do ($) on the inside of the house though!

Thought you'd laugh at this-
For a second, I thought the little "A", "B", "C" and "D" were part of that one window box. Like they were stuck in there on little stakes or something. :-)
I'll blame it on the blonde.

Well I'm anxious to see what you come up with so I can steal your ideas too:) I usually just get some mums and decorate with my pumpkins, maybe a corn stalk and a hay bale. Hopefully my girls will help me make a scarecrow again. That's about it for me!

I grew up in FL, so fall planting pretty much doesn't exist. It feels like fall when the rest of the country is experiencing winter. I never owned a mum until I moved to VA! See how deprived I've been in life? I love all your inspiration pictures! Love the black container...with that tall grass. :o) I haven't talked about 'falling up' the outside yet because it's still 90* outside and my neighbors would think I have a screw loose. I'm waiting until October. I think. I'll try. I swear.

I love fall.. I hate that we don't have much of one in the south b/c it's such a great time of year (and also my birthday!)
I usually only do pumpkins, fall leaves & maybe some hay. Thank you so much for the great ideas!

I love fall plants but haven't tried anything but mums. Pansies are good down here in the south.

I don't usually do too much outside, because I'm terrible at remembering to water things. I think if you keep it in containers (like the ones you pictured), it would be easy. And then stick an aqua globe inside. Those things are the only reason my indoor plants are alive! Ha!

I do love the white pumpkins. But then I also love the yellow, orange and green gourds as well. I just love fall colors in general. So earthy. I think that's why all of my house is in earth tones!

Speaking of the price of the big pumpkin...I can't believe how expensive pumpkins are these days! Last year, most smallish ones were at least $8-$10!

Love the pics, I have some of the same one in my files! I tried some fall flowers in my window boxes but it is just too hot here still and they didn't make it. Somehow they never look quite like the inspiration pics!

Hi, Chris, all those pics are beautiful! I love to look at them, but dont' do any planting outside in the winter. Lots of folks around here do mums & pansies. I'm just too lazy to try to take care of them during the winter months, so I just don't. But, go for it. I love that fallish grass, along with the white pumpkins...oh yeah, those white pumpkins are great.

Caren said...

Everything is beautiful! We'll be doing some changes to our outside soon too but I still don't have the heart to rip out perfectly good flowers when it's still warm enough for them. It will have to happen soon though, I'm SO ready for a fally change.

I love doing things outside...more on the outside than in but simply because I can stay outside now since the cool weather has arrived. Love all those pics...thanks for sharing some ideas.

I can't wait to see your outdoor Fall decorating. I usually don't plant Fall plants just decorate with the pumpkins, mums, hay bales, etc.

Those are great pictures! Here in MN I don't plant anything new in the fall. It wouldn't have time to start to grow before winter! But I did plant mums in the spring and some of them are huge now.

I just planted a BUNCH of cabbage kale and Mums in my front yard. It looks sooooo much better. I'm still not done. Love the ideas they are great!

I'd buy every single one of those plants, but I'm sure the heat and humidity would kill them in 30 minutes flat. Beautiful pictures. I've seen pumpkins that big before but holy cow are they expensive! Can't wait to see what plantings you come up with.

PS - I tagged you. You can read about it on my blog.

Hi Chris,

Yeah, it seems like most of our blogger friends are in the south, doesn't it?

At my old house, I would go crazy with the outdoor fall decor and then right into Halloween with the orange lights and everything! I had a cute little bungalow in Grosse Pointe Woods, if you know where that is...I miss my old home and neighborhood so much!!!

Out here, where I live now, it's more of a rural sub and everyone's house sits way back...I tried the fall decor thing, but no one else does it and I can't even see any of it from our house, just when we pull into the driveway. I can do it right on our house, but then no one would see it from the street and we wouldn't even see it that much either, we never come in the front door, lol.

So...my next home will be in a neighborhood again...I'm such a city girl, born & raised in Detroit, actually...so this rural lifestyle is really not for me! Can't wait to move when our older son graudates in 2013...and hopefully homes in MI will be selling again by then!

Can't wait to see what you do :)

Thanks for the inspiration... I'm waiting until the first weekend in October to do my fall transformation. It's still 80+ here, can't think fall as much as I would love too.

Nice pictures for fall decorating ideas. Here is a tip! I am going to put small pumpkins and gords in my (drained) birdbath near the front porch. To make your gords and pumpkins last longer, spray the pumpkins and gords with several coats of lacquer or hair spray. They last much longer and it gives them a nice glossy finish.
MOM PS: this months Martha Stewart magazine has tons of pumpkins ideas. Check it out!

OMG! I love these ideas they all look so cute. I may have to try some of them don't you just love those white pumpkins. we have a guy that grows them here he said they were called cinderella pumpkins.

I'm so glad you posted. I'm getting married at my parents house in a few weeks and my mom has been eagerly landscapring for fall. In fact the rustic planter is extreemly similar to one we have.

I should plead, that I have no knowledge of plants or even gardening, so excuse my ignorance...but I've found the tall grasses to be a great one, there also one that is a darker brown with little fuzzies, he's my fav. My fiance made a wooden wagon and we are having potted plants: Cale, mums, she also picked up a few pansies to add some color.

She has TONS of the Big White hydrangea bushes around the house and a few weeks ago picked them as they turned green and brown, dried them...(they maintain their color)and is planning to work a few into her planters and window boxes. We all also adding some grapevine to give a bit of a rustic look too.

Thanks for the pics. I'll be sure to include some photos of the natural decor after the fact!

I love to put some pumpkins and mums outside, and maybe some other stuff but we'll see what inspires me...the problem is that the pumpkins aren't really out here yet, so I am stumped. I am waiting for the pumpkin festival in a few weeks and then I will hopefully get the job done!

We plant winter flowers that will last until next Summer. So we could plant flowers in Fall colors but would have to live with them all winter and spring. I love all your outdoor Fall pictures. I wonder how they carried that huge pumpkin out there...a crane?

Chris,
Thanks for that post, it's just what I needed to motivate me. I was sitting on my back porch this morning wondering "what should I do with my pots". You have inspired me. I will try to post pics of what I will attempt later next week. Can you include my blog on your blog list?

Thanks so much,
Debbie
