What is it about Art Supplies?

As the nesting continues at Just a Girl’s house, I have turned to art supplies.  I used to store everything in a drawer inside pencil boxes, but that just never worked well enough.  So I decided to try something else.

I bought this box years ago (to put diapers in, if that tells you how long ago!) at Target.  I thought it was the perfect solution for my art supplies.

Of course, we’ve got to have some cute containers for all those supplies, and I liked the idea of soup cans.  Yup…just plain ol’ cans from the pantry.  Rip the paper off, wash them out, and you’re done.

My original plan was to spray paint them some fun colors, but I ended up loving the sleek contrast of them compared to all the color from the supplies.  Silver they stay.

You could always head to the dollar section at Target and buy these.  I love them.

Now when my kids want to draw or color, they know that they go into the hutch and get this bad boy out.  They know they aren’t done picking up until everything is put back into its place and the box is stored away.

It may seem like an excess of supplies, but when you can buy crayons for .10 cents a box right now, this is the time to buy!

Looks fantastic!! That is how I like to organize. Visually, so I can see what I have, AND it looks pretty (that's sometimes easier said than done). My big problem is how to keep the almost 2 year old out of it. She likes stuff she can see, too!

I love your organization ideas! I am going to use the can idea. I had not thought it that.. It also looks so cute!

Very cute and easy idea. We have all of ours in one of the drawers in the china cabinet. I like this idea better.

Cute! Mine are all in fish bowls at the moment.

However, I have great plans for them. Once the boss lets me spend some money! ;)

I love it! It reminds me of something from Real Simple. And when did they start making crayons like that?? I have been out of the coloring world for too long.

Loving the idea of using simple tin cans! I so wish we had Target in the UK, I think I could spend a good deal of time and money in there! If only my supplies at school stayed looking like that :0)

Love it! At home I use a utensil holder basket (it has three compartments for utensils & a spot for napkins too) with a handle. It has been very useful for my little guy to tote from room to room eith all the supplies.

I like this a lot. And you're right: the soup cans look so sleek and cool! What a good idea. This is A+ recycling.

I always buy crayons at this time of year, even if we don't need new ones. If nothing else, I have crayons to put in our Christmas shoebox for Operation Christmas Child--I figure any kid would love to get a new box of Crayolas.

Stop by Imparting Grace if you get a chance. I made myself some cute baskets for organizing my closet. And I'm doing an impromptu giveaway. I learned an expensive lesson about being disorganized, and I'm sharing the results.

When does school start??

I so love this! Still as an adult I love art supplies, pens, pencils, all that! Guess that's why I wanted to be a teacher! :)
My daughter's inherited this same disease too. We just cleaned out her desk the other day and we could open a Office Depot with all the notebooks, pads, markers, crayons, etc.

Love the idea. I myself stocked up on boxes of 24 crayons - $.24 a box. How could I beat that. Think I'm going to try this for my daughter's stuff.

I have just done something like this very similar at home. My boys love to draw without any notice...they just like to be able to sit down and do it, rather than go searching for everything. Love it!

Love all your organizing ideas. Sometimes I think that I became a teacher so I could have all the school supplies I ever wanted. Still love the freshly sharpened, new Ticonderoga pencils!

Art supplies are too beautiful to be hidden away in a drawer...this is a lovely display. I used a cobalt blue IKEA plant pot to hold my colored SHARPIE collection :)

What-EVER. I want to see you do this with a 6,4 and 1 year old Miss Fancy Cans.

(I'm just jealous that your kids know what putting away means.)

Looks simply yummy! I too feel like I can't organize enough. Probably why I adore your blog so darn much! ;) I have to say I'm not even nearly as close to "perfection" (don't tell the nester!) as you are in organizing.
I couldn't get over your kitchen cabinets the other day. I must have wayyyy to much stuff, as I would run out of cabinets if I organized that way. eeekkk!

So, I have to ask... where is the label on the art supply box? ;)
