A Surprise Find

Hi.  It’s me.  The 35 year old woman with the 79 year old back.  I’m vertical now, so I had to celebrate by going to a consignment shop.  A few months ago I had seen these in Pottery Barn catalog. (Sorry, couldn’t find a bigger picture.)  They were priced at $149.00.  Uh…wha?

img2m_thumbnail

I thought they were neat, but I never thought much of them.   It’s not like I was madly in love with them or anything.  Then I saw these.

IMG_5060 Wanna know how much I paid for them?  $1.99 a piece.  That’s $3.98.  And don’t think I didn’t need a calculator to figure that out.

IMG_5056

I’ve had this blank spot in my kitchen/eating area for years, and I’ve never been able to decide on what to put there.  Luckily, my frugalness decided for me.  I don’t figure I’ll find anything else I like nearly as much for only $3.98.

IMG_5062

Here’s the view from the living room.  I like how it ties the kitchen and eating area together, yet seems to blend in with the living area.  However, I don’t like how my husband looks like he’s plotting how he’s going to kill me.

LOL! Your humor cracks me up...about your husband, not your decorating!

That is amazing! What a deal, and I like the ones you found better than Pottery Barn's! I love them over the door!

You are so funny...but, he does look a little mad about something, huh??? Did he have to hang the fork and spoon??? They look great...and what a bargain!! You go, girl...glad you're feeling some better!! Take care!!!

The look on your husbands face and what you wrote had me cracking up!

maybe he is trying to figure out why you needed such big utensils... your right, would not have thought much from the catalog, ecspecially considering the price... what a great find....

Jen - Balancing Beauty and Bedlam said...

Whoot whoot...yea!! I love them as well and will gladly take them off your hand when your $3.98 frugalness wants them no more.
How can your husband not be as happy as we are about your find? :)

Your husband face it too funny, Now, I gotta go looking in my garage for my spoon and fork.. My best friend came to visit me a few months ago and when she saw my spoon and fork hanging on the wall in my kitchen, She said, " you know thats ole fashion" she really picked on my decor, so I took it down..because I do remember my mom having the mega utensils up.. Thanks for sharing, see I knew they were still in style.

Magic Brush said...

I swear I sold those on a garage sale a few years back. I bought the same fork and spoon at a garage sale. Had them in my studio for a couple of years laying in my "need to paint them prettier" pile. It never happened. My husband put them on our garage sale. I'm sad now. Great find!

good find and great deal. I would love to know the kind of person who could/would pay $149.00 for a large spoon and fork--I just can't imagine. Victoria has a spoon she found at goodwill---she hasn't used it yet. Maybe I'll have to steal it away.

Mary-Catherine said...

lol those are awesome! But yes, your husband looks considerably miffed.

Amanda @ Bibs and Cribs said...

Wow--you always find the BEST deals! I am so JEALOUS! Love those!

Mrs. E said...

Is that what that look means? I get that all the time! : ) Great find!

LOL! The look on his face is priceless. Oh and I love the ginormous utensils. Funny, my parents had a set of those in their kitchen over 30 years ago! I should have stored them away:)

Katy said...

If he's anything like my husband he's thinking "why the hell is she hanging up a fork and spoon on the wall when I could USE THOSE".

Men.

Nikki said...

LMAO at the comments AND your hubbie's face. Priceless!

Rachelle said...

Oh, that face is familure. I get the same one from my husband when he's trying to figure out if I really spent 4.00 on something new or really spent 149.00 and just scratched the 1 and the 9 off the price tag. Wait what? Oh, you don't do that. Oh, me either. What weirdos.

:) Glad your back is better!

Vivienne @ the V Spot said...

Not only can I NOT BELIEVE your got them for less than $4, but they are so much cuter than PB's!

As far as your hubs, well, I can understand. He looks comfy, hanging out on the couch in his sweatshirt... chillin' . When I'm in that mode I am usually not keen on photo ops. :-)

However, he should still be giddy about your barstools and your fab finds, over all. :-)

I'm still amazed at the deals that you find!

You go girl! What a great deal. They look perfect up there over the door!

Amber B. said...

Sorry about your back. If it makes you feel better, I'm 31 and my back is horrible, too. I think the kids do it to us! Carrying around babies and carseats and diaper bags just ruins the back.

Great finds at the thrift store. Much better than PB prices!!

christy said...

lol! Your husband's exprssion is priceless!

Love the spoon & fork! A total bargain!

Julie said...

Those SO remind me of the mega-sized fork and spoon in my great grandmothers house when I was a kid. Funny how all this old become new again!

Staci said...

Love it! Totally cute in that spot.

I must ask.. is your sofa white? Do you have issue keeping it clean/ungrungy (is that a word??) Please stop by my blog and a couple of posts down I debate my desire to redo my living room including my wanting a white couch. (2 kids and dog... luckily the dog is white!) I'd love your opinion/advice. And if you can't already tell... I love your room!

Amanda@Imperfectly Beautiful said...

LOVE those! And yes...hubby looks scary in that pic.

Evy said...

Those look very neat! I like how they go with your dark-colored accents in the dining area (chairs) and contrast with the rest (color-wise). A really neat find, indeed!

Paula said...

Love the new finds! And I'm glad to hear you are feeling better.

Rachel Berry said...

Those are awesome!! They would also look totally Fabulous painted black and then distressed a little. Well that's what I would do.!! Congrats on the bargain you lucky girl!!

Nice silverwarr (woodware?).

Funny hubs.

Kristen said...

No - your husband is thinking "She bought an oversized spoon and a fork and now she's blogging about it."
Dan asks me that all the time - "are you blogging about this?!?" Um, yes, I am. Great find on the giant utensils. Certainly not a portion control help, but on days when you get super hungry, just turn to the shovel. ;)

First of all, the utensils are better than the pottery barn set. Secondly, do you know where all the sharp implements in your house are? I think you husband may. Third - What is SITS? Fourth, I totally commiserate with you about the back pain. Feel better soon!

Linda said...

What a great find! I think your right he is plotting something....

Jennifer Juniper said...

Ahhh, the old fork and spoon...it used to be that every kitchen growing up had a set of these.

My aunt used to pull the spoon off the wall when her kids were bad and paddle them with it! I saw it once and the love affair with the giant fork and spoon abruptly ended right then and there.

Did you see the big fork and spoon episode of Everybody Loves Raymond? Classic.

I do agree that your husband looks like he is plotting something with that big fork.

Maybe he thinks you are having an affair with a giant that comes over for breakfast after he leaves for work. Better be nice :)

Mommy of M's said...

OH, I LOVE those! I've been looking everywhere for something like that since I saw them in Pottery Barn!

I'm so jealous!

Your caption on the photo with your husband gave me my first out-loud laugh of the day. ;)

Beth@The Stories of A to Z said...

I'm so jealous. I just did a post about a similar item but my fork and spoon aren't nearly as nice and I paid the same price.

Jackie said...

I've seen those in the PB catalog too, and love them... except the price. They look great. I want a set also for above my kitchen window. Pier1 had some a few months back. Great find!

Thistle House Primitives said...

Someone else mentioned it....but you have got to see the "Everybody Loves Raymond" episode about his folks and the giant fork and spoon!! I had no idea those were back in fashion!! Great bargain!!

~Kristen~ said...

LOL at your husband!!! I agree with a few of the other commenters who mentioned they like the ones you found better than the PB version. They have a sense of nostalgia to them. I remember in the 70's and 80's growing up and seeing similar peices in kitchens! I love that!

Anonymous said...

Fabulous find...and I'm dying laughing at your husband's expression! That look gets thrown around in our house a lot. Usually when I'm talking about fabric, or hanging something, or my favorite "honey I need help with..." and then que the look. But I like your fork and spoon much better than Pottery Barn's. Wow, paired up with your chair deal you can't help but smile when you look at your kitchen :)

My Mom had someof those years ago in our kitchen. I want to say they were gold and came from Home interior. Funny how things always seem to roll back around. One good thing is we always make it better looking. Love yours!

Wow, those are really cool. I love finding really neat things at great prices. They look great in there.
Hubby on the other hand, looks a bit on the angry side. (he he)

Now that's a frugal price! Wow!

Reminds me of that episode of Everybody Loves Raymond..do you remember that one? Marie has a big fork and spoon in her kitchen.

My Mom used to have a pair like that in a frame hanging in our "very seventies" kitchen. When she remodeled she took them down and I think they were sold at a yard sale about 15 years ago. I remember back then thinking they were ghastly - but I would love to have them now to hang in my kitchen. Funny how styles and tastes totally change through the years.

I'm dying to know if you made your magnet board (hanging up in the background) and if so, how did you do it? I have a frame that I would like to repurpose into a magnet board and don't know what type of material to purchase. Any suggestions? Thanks!

i know it's been mentioned but you really do have to see the Everybody Loves Raymond episode with the fork and spoon. "Don't let a suitcase full of cheese become your giant fork and spoon." Hi-larious.

I have a pair, too. Given to me right off the wall at my grandmother-in-laws trailer. yes, trailer, I kid you not. And now in Pottery Barn and looking lovely in your house. I'm putting mine up this weekend. :)
