Just Another Manic…Every Day.

Well, let’s see. How do I recap what’s been going on at Just a Girl’s house? Remember when this happened last year? Well, almost one year to the day later, we now have this problem.

IMG_7123

Notice anything? That’s my washing machine above. My husband decided he was going to tear it apart and look at it fix it, so he took it out to the garage. First he looked at it…

IMG_6985

…and then he looked at it again. It has now been 9 days (9 DAYS!), and I have no washing machine.

IMG_6987

However, when I do get one (hopefully Wednesday) I would like it to make my laundry room look like this.

Photo_Video_984343628_medium

Heck, I’ll even take something like this.

favorite laundry

My question for you? Anyone have a front loading washing machine that they’re MADLY in love with for UNDER $1,000.00? Recommendations?!

Believe me. This guy is in no mood to spend that kind of money on an appliance right now.

IMG_6989 Somone’s gonna ask. No. We don’t own a tractor. My husband is an avid worker-outer. I am not. He thinks he needs this huge tractor tire to work out with. I. do. not.

I am cracking up at this post! Hope that your new washing machine is all you imagine, and if it makes your laundry room look like any of those awesome photos, please let me know EXACTLY where you got it. And one last question, what on earth does he do with a tractor tire to work out? It's giant!!! Roll it around?
Still laughing,

I have the Whirlpool Duet HE washer and dryer from Sears. I got them about 1 year ago and I love them. We were previously using DH's set that was about 14 years old. UGH they were AWFUL! At first I wasn't sure I wanted front loaders but because of space issues I needed to be able to stack them. Let me tell you, I have never looked back! They are great!! Do some research though- check out a Consumer's Report if you can find one-they always have good info. Oh, I think ours were a bit over $1000 each...if you can catch a sale then that might help.

Love your blog btw...just found it a few weeks ago. I've already painted my garage door black! LOL Love it!

Nine days--oh, man! Good luck. I have a 12yo washer and dryer set that has been roughly handled (ie, majorly banged up) by several movers.

On another note, I had a tire like that for a sandbox when I was a little kid--you just gave me a happy flashback. ;)

What a total BUMMER! We bought the least expensive Fridgidaire Front loaders available at American (our area for laundry only fits the front loaders). We have been happy with them and had no problems for almost 2 years now. (knock on wood). They are nothing fancy, but we got them both for under $900. I hope you find something that works for you!

We bought the GE duet set but didn't get the drawers underneath because I wanted to fold on top. Love them. they are very quiet, but I do let the washer dry out with the door slightly open afterward. Many said the door grows mold, but never had that problem. We got them at Lowes.

You must get front loading!! We got ours this summer, right under $1,000 I think. It is a Whirlpool. It uses less soap, less water and you can CRAM it full. It will way cut down on the amount of loads you do. It is dreamy really!

1.) I have tons of pictures of my husband looking at, I mean fixing things. Same blank stare. Priceless.
2.) Holy tire? That's some killer workout.

Yes! I am the proud owner of a set of Samsung LG Silver Technology. I got them from Lowes this past June. They were on sale for around 900, got the 10% discount for 1yr free financing and 10% discount from Samsung. Ended up paying about $1300 for both.

I have a GE front loader that I love but I can't remember what we paid for it.

I have a whirlpool duet, I like, but don't love it. My parents recently got a Kenmore toploader without the agitator, so you get the benefits of a front loader, BUT you can throw something in if you forget it. I recommend checking them out, they are cheaper and hold a ton!

Jodee said...

Oh no! You poor thing! We just bought the Whirlpool Duet and they have made my life sooo much easier! I can actually get caught up on laundry in a few hours! They are worth every penny you spend! My hubby even likes to do the laundry now!

I love my Maytag Epic Z pair. I really love that they have all the features I need, and more, without the huge price tag of others. I usually do 3 loads a day, every day. The water and hydro we have saved on these is huge. And way less soap. I should have done it much sooner.

Laurel @ Ducks in a Row said...

Love those laundry rooms. I had a repairman come 2 1/2 years ago to fix my washing machine and he wouldn't even touch it. It still cleans the clothes, it just sounds like a rocket blasting off. I've been waiting for it to crash so I can upgrade, but it keeps hanging in there. I've been collecting pictures for years now . . . but someday I'll be ready!

I love your husband just staring at it like something was magically going to happen!

My friend just got a top loader without the agitator and loves it. Let us know what you get.

Aw...9 days is 8 too many:) We love the LG washer and dryer from Best Buy. They are about seven hundred each and are wonderful!! When we were shopping around they had the best deals and if I remember correctly there were a few front loaders that were all around the seven or eight hundred dollar range! Good luck!!!

The Clines said...

You are SO funny! I just had to write and tell you that I can relate. At the end of June, our dryer broke and stayed broke for over 3 weeks while my husband tried to decide how to fix it. Ugh. We ended up buying a new one. Of course, we could've done that 3 weeks earlier!

Kelly said...

I just went 8 weeks without a TV. I think 9 days without a washer would be worse.

BTW, I didn't know you were from MI until I saw the maize and blue. Are you U of M fans? :)

Mandee said...

We've had the LG set for about 2 years- and they've been great- EXCEPT FOR- and this is a huge "except for"- the washing machine gets stinky, mildew smelling. I guess this is a problem with a lot of front loaders, and there are certain products you can buy to help with that. And vinegar has been a suggestion, too.

They're really cute to look at, but I think when mine finally break, I will go back to the top loader.

Good luck!

MFC - you found the picture I needed to design my new basement laundry room with! You are SUCH a good friend and you didn't even know it! I am such a good friend as to remind you that you will find some AH-MAY-ZING sales on w/d this weekend for Labor Day! Tell your hubby that he can keep the old machine parts for other workout equipment and off you go to buy new! Done and done! Now I am singing the Bangles funny non-working out girl. Thanks.

Thanks for the great links you posted! So sorry for the demise of your washer! You know how important an appliance is to your home when you count the days you've been without it!

HouseMama said...

Do you have a Sears or Orchard Supply Hardware in your area? I purchased my front loader about 9 months ago for $600 and there were 2 rebates from PG&E and our city. Those two rebates made the washer less than the top loader that I was looking out. Now the fact that I NEVER sent in the two rebates is just between you and me, okay???

That is so very not fun. My husband wouldn't be able to wait that long... we have 5 kids and our house would be overfilled with clothes...!! All th labor day sales are coming up so you should be able to find some deals that way. Also, we have a "dent" store around our house and that costs us hundreds less than regular stores. Also, the dents are never really obvious. I still haven't found the dent that were supposed to be on ours. Also, when I do my laundry, I always add vinegar to the wash... it sanitizes and would keep the washer from loading, although mine is a top loader I am sure it would help with the moldy smell for front loaders. I love your pics about the laundry room. That is my dream!! Those pics of your husband are too funny!! You two are a beautiful couple!! :)

I think you might need an entire tractor (not just the tire) to mow that expanse of a farm you live on. That's a HUGE yard! Hope you get your washer on Wednesday and what a great excuse to redecorate the entire room :).

I just got the Whirlpool Duet HE front loader a couple of weeks ago. Purchased at Lowe's for about $600 w/ a 5-yr extended warranty (addl $100). We didn't get the pedestal as we'll be stacking the dryer on top--whenever the current one bites the dust. Good luck!

Yikes! I love the look on your husbands face as he glares at the washer tub! Almost like he is waiting for it to tell him exactly what to do next. Kuddos to him for trying to fix it DIY style!
We have the LG set. We bought them at Sears. They were very affordable, have lots of features and work great!

yikes...9 days. I feel for you, I really do. I have a 4(at least) year old Frigidaire that I love. It has no bells and whistles(no digital display, etct.) Just knobs. It does a fantastic job and I do leave the door open a bit but have never had the smell issue some have. It had to be waaaay under $1000. I'm sure both washer and dryer weren't much over that together. Good luck! oh..we got ours at Lowe's.

Anonymous said...

I am so in your shoes. My washer has been broken for about three weeks now. We are a family of five! We are making a little progress now though. The part isn't sitting on our kitchen table anymore. It's at the shop after i got out a hammer and threatened to "fix" it myself. My husband said to leave it alone. I said like everyone else is leaving it alone? Point taken.

Hope it's not as long for you. :)

Kelley said...

Be very careful when you buy a front-load; many of them have issues. Because of the door mount, water can drip down into the bottom of the "door well" and then mold/mildew and smell like raw sewage (nice thought, huh?). I can't speak to which ones DON'T do this but I know that the Bosch DOES for sure. My sister and a girlfriend also (besides the Bosch) had this same issue but I'm not sure what brands they had. They say that this can be remedied by wiping out the door well after each load; I'm just not sure I'd be that diligent. I have the GE Profile Harmony which is GIANT but top loading. Best of luck and I love your blog.

WOW... 9 days, I cannot even imagine!

My front loader was a lot more than your price BUT if you find one on sale or used RUN from it! I am not a huge fan... it has been non-stop problems, super loud, loves to walk even though it is balanced and store water that will become moldy if I dont clean it all the time. ;) Money well spent, huh?

It is the Maytag Neptune from 2005 or 2006 in the beautiful platinum color. The dryer however is good. I blogged about it a few months ago and someone else had the same problems and the pair was a whooping four, yes four, thousand.

Anywoo, good luck!

Wow 9 days that's a lot! But try going about 4 months without a kitchen! Our recent remodel left me without a kitchen for that long, because my husband does all our remodeling! It wasn't too bad except for the fact that I gained probably 20 lbs from the constant eating out at restaurants and fast food! Hope you get the washing set you want! Have a great day!

Nine days! Oh my, I can only image the mountain.

I have a front loader set from Frigidare that we got from HH Gregg about 4 1/2 yrs ago and I love them. It was under $1000.00 for the pair and I have never had an issue with it (hope that doesn't jinx me). I would not recommend an LG though. I had a friend that got an LG front loader and had problems from day one.

Wish you luck on finding a washer that works great for you!!

beth said...

Well, heck yes! I'd love for my laundry room to look like those, too! We just purchased a front loading washer from Home Depot a few months ago. It was an emergency, so we just got one of the least expensive machines that they had. It's a GE, and I think it works good for the price. It definitely works a LOT better than our old top loader. Hope you find your new washer soon.

LOVE.LOVE.LOVE my Electrolux. The install guys said that it is very rare that they have to repair them. I had them stacked so that I would have more counter space. My clothes smell so good and clean now and I hardly use any soap. I also think they have rebates on them every other month. The machine alerts you after 50 cycles to do a "clean out" cycle so it doesn't get musty smelling. LOVE IT!!!

I found my front loading washer and dryer at Best Buy for something like $600 and $800 because they were units that had been purchased and returned because they didn't fit in someone's laundry area. Never been used, but had been taken out of the store so we got them cheap. I would ask about floor models too. Sometimes you can find some great deals! Mine are LG and I love them.

I have a front loader washer and dryer by Frigidaire that we purchased probably four to five years ago. Hate them!!! We've had more problems with both of them (acutally had both of them replaced within the year warranty). Many, many repairs. Still having problems because of poor design.

I suggest doing lots of research before purchasing. Good luck with your search.

My 16 year old washer just gave out this spring and we scouted the sales till we found an LG pair at Home Depot for $900 something each. They are great! I always leave the door open a while after the last load and wipe off the door to prevent the sour smell.

We read lots of reviews and Consumer Reports before buying and are very satisfied.

We have a whirlpool duet sport that we bought 2.5 years ago, and I love it. It has never been stinky. We got the larger capacity washer.

Just wanted to add you can get some great rebates with the front loaders also. When we bought ours it was around 700 dollars, and we got a 100 dollar rebate, a 85 dollar rebate from our energy company, and a 150 dollar state tax credit.

Ha, this post is hilarious, especially the last pic: "Would you quit taking pictures of me looking at the washer parts?!"

And my curiosity is winning out here: how is the tractor tire incorporated into a workout?

Unknown said...

Those pictures of your husband taking apart the washer and looking at it are cracking me up. My husband would totally do the same thing, except he'd probably kick it in a fit of rage or something and then break his foot, I'm sure.

We got our LG front loaders from refurbking on ebay. Fraction of the price, even with the extended warranty. Can't go wrong!

Chris said...

The tire answer...apparently, you just keep lifting it up and flipping it over. It's serves as a workout for legs, shoulders, back, arms, etc.--especially if you want to throw someone in an MMA fight. He flips it up and down the hill. I sit on the couch and watch him.

Too funny! Thanks for the chuckle. Can't help with a front loader under a grand though, I have the same kind that's currently in your driveway! :)
BTW, the tractor tire bit was priceless.

Although I love my front load wash machine ( basic Kenmore front load washer ),so gentle on my favourite clothes. I have to admit that it doesn't clean my husbands work clothes worth a damn. Granted they are mud caked, oil grimed, very dirty, dig in the dirt all day kind of dirty clothes - still, I had to buy a second hand old top load to get the real dirty stuff clean. There is a difference -just to let you know.

What a chuckle I had reading your post! Hope you get it sorted, sorry not much help being over here in the UK - all the talk of top loaders is far too confusing!! Would not know what to do with it! My front loading AEG does me fine that has enough buttons and functions to keep me busy! Look forward to some exciting projects with all the washing machine parts that are going to be scrapped - I'm sure there is a project in there somewhere! :o)
And as for the tyre! LOL!!

Julie said...

Sister, 9 days in too long! I think my kids would be out of undies! But on to your question. We bought a new washer 6 months ago-an LG, front loader. My hubby talked them(Best Buy) down by bringing up other stores pricing and walked out paying $600. And your hubby could probably just flex his muscles and they would drop the price. Or roll in his tire and look ...well how he looks! Good luck!

Deb. said...

I am on my second one. The first one broke a minute after the 3 yr warrantee ran out. Was told it would cost as much to fix than replace. A GE something or other. So, silly me am trying again, new one is a Maytag Epic Z. they use much less water and spin everything almost dry! I only use HE detergent now. And also after reading up- keep the door (the detergent door as well) cracked a bit. Everyone says if you don't it can lead to stench build up. There is a option for "clean washer" and you have to buy special tablets for this. Only did it once because one came with the washer.

Our front-loader is a Frigidaire. We chose it because I checked on the Consumer Reports website and they recommended it as a best buy. We have the Frigidaire, which we've had FOREVER. Yea, they're not known for washers/dryers, but back in the day they were the only game in town for stackable HE.
A couple of things to keep in mind, with front-loader HE washer you have to keep the door open between washes otherwise you get a funky smell (because of the seal). You really have to use the HE soap, but you use a TINY amount.

I am obviously part of the minority...but I really don't like my front-loader washing machine. Hope my husband doesn't read this! I begged him for months to let me get one. We have a GE. It was cheap but even though we have kept the door open it still has a funny smell, the clothes get all twisted together which it makes it hard to get them out without dropping them on the floor. Plus it has eaten holes in several pieces of clothing. May have just got a lemon but I'm going back to a top loader next time. If you want a good deal on a used front loader.....I've got a good deal for you! Good luck with the laundry room...can't wait to see the finished product.
