A Program Interruption

I have him-hawed about this post for quite some time. I him-ed. I hawed.  I finally came to the conclusion that you are my people. When something significant happens, it should be something you share with your people, right?

IMG_1327

I’ve dropped subtle hints for the past couple of years, but I’ve never actually said that my husband is in law enforcement.  Uh…he’s in law enforcement.

IMG_1121

Our house has been a little chaotic recently because he was selected to be on the E.S team for his department (other depts. call it SWAT). It was a career goal for him to be selected, so he’s extremely excited. Me?  Not so much.

The downfall at this point is that he’s gone for training for two months.  I know there are a lot of single moms out there, and I constantly commend you for your work.  However, the thought of doing this on my own isn’t necessarily appealing to me.

IMG_1038

You think I’m being dramatic?  Look at these crazy kids. They’re gonna eat me alive!

232323232fp53697_nu=328;_856_573_WSNRCG=336774_6_332_nu0mrj

 232323232fp53836_nu=328;_856_573_WSNRCG=336774_6;332_nu0mrj

Because my husband might freak that I mentioned he’s out of town, I should remind you of my secret weapon.

IMG_1113

He may be dumber than a box of rocks, but he is smart enough to bite your face off if you decide to harm us.

IMG_1660

Of course, you could always turn the sprinklers on.  Then, he would stop in his tracks.

IMG_0799

While my husband is repelling out of helicopters and training in sniper shooting, I will be shopping for school clothes and spray painting something. Kinda makes you wonder how we’re even married, doesn’t it? :)

Big congrats! My hubby is a highway patrolman! All the helicopters and snipers I'm sure sounds fun to him too. I was actually a single first time Mom when he left for academy when our first was only 7 weeks! And he was gone for 5 months! Whew! I know what you're feeling right now! Hang in there!

LOL!! Funny yet serious post.

As a sole parent myself, it isn't easy. But the bonus for you is, someone else is busy bringing home the bacon. That's one fulltime thing off your list I don't have.

You'll do great! And congrats to your hubby for landing a dream opportunity!

Congrats! My husband is gone all the time, but it is because he is in school. By 2014 we should be done (sarcasm is lost in type form:) It really will be nice when he is done with school and on a normal schedule.

P.S. I love the shot of the secret weapon with the sprinkler.

Well - congrats on the career success and best of luck to you. You can do it!!

Holly @ Roller Coaster Life said...

I know what you go through. I am not a single parent and never want to be!! But my husband is an air traffic controller and every so often he has to go out to Oklahoma City to make sure he is still up to date on the way of the sky! While this is good for people flying, its not good for me! I have two babies and I hate doing it alone!

He even missed our daughters birth because the dumb government would not let him come home!!

Poot.

Jodee said...

You poor thing! I hate single parenting and I am soooo bad at it too. Congrats to your husband though!

Love your post. You can do it...and with that special secret weapon you'll be super safe. :) Is he a mastiff?? We have a bull mastiff great dane mix and he may look huge and scary but he's just a big huge couch potato. :)

Congratulations to your husband! My husband is also in law enforcement, but he only has two years on. He's really looking forward to going out for a cool team. I hope the next two months fly by for you.

I love your "secret weapon!" =) My husband's in the military so living without my husband is a reality for me sometimes. =( Congratulations to your husband and good luck to you! =)

Kristin @ My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia said...

Congrat's to him!! One of my best girlfriends husband is in the military high up which means he has had to be away a lot. I always asked her how she dealt with it and she said it actually keeps the marriage fresh and she always feels like they are on their honeymoon when he gets back :) It will be hard but I hope the time goes fast for you!!

Pam said...

Congrats to your hubby!! My man was law enforcement for 31 yrs and it is a gift to be called to serve. You will do just fine and I do love that "little puppy" you have there!!!!! God bless your family.

Their Mommy His Wife said...

that is the most adorable secret weapon! I have a big soft spot for "secret weapons" lol.. mine is a boxer/pit bull mix and she is protective, yet the biggest klutz (her nickname is Kramer!)
I was a single parent for 7 years and now that I'm married SAHM, it's a little easier that I don't have to worry about bringing home the bacon, per se, but it always seems now that when DH is gone on a business trip is when something kooky happens. Just make sure you have a hide-a-key and you know where the water shut off valves and the fuse box are and you'll be just fine LOL.

Kenzie said...

You will be fine! My husband has been gone for the past 3 weeks and we have 2 more weeks left to go and then he deploys shortly after that so I will be a single Mom for 1 year! Yikes! I feel your pain! Hang in there!

I am not a huge commentor, but I wanted to thank you, your husband and your family for your sacrifices for keeping us safe! Our law enforcement and soldiers and their families are my heros and my husband and I LOVE you all and appareciate you!

Oh my word! You are so STINKIN' funny!! You seriously crack me up.

Congrat's to your hubby. And Congrat's to you too...because you will make it through this transition. All ya need is a can of spray paint...and you'll be good to go!
:-)
Happy painting..OH..and school shopping.

I never comment because I read through google reader, but I had to this time. My hubby is in Law Enforcement also and is super secretive about who I tell. He'd fall over dead if I ever had a blog post stating that he was in Law Enforcement and he was out of town!
To top off all the late hours and erratic schedule, he is foing to the Bahamas for work at the end of the month. Not Fair!
Congrats to hubby and hang in there and see what you learn about yourself!

Louley's Belles said...

I will say a prayer for you. I know that is a big thing if your hubby is usually very involved with the kids. My hubby has to leave on occasion for a couple of days and I think the world is falling apart around me. Just kidding, but we do miss him a lot. So 2 months....I will pray for your sanity and his safety.

Sarah said...

I've never commented before - but this stopped me in my tracks. We are living parallel lives! My husband started an Army job a few weeks ago and is leaving for a few months in 2 weeks. He'll miss the first day of kindergarten for our oldest, as well as Thanksgiving. I am most worried about surviving weekends (I work FT, so they are in School / Daycare during the week). How will I entertain them all? (They are 2,3, and 5).

It doesn't help that my husband is super involved and does a lot of the transportation and cooking for us!

Good luck!

You are too funny! But seriously, congrats on your husband's new position! And best of luck manning everything while he is away. You'll do great. With your sense of humor you can never go wrong!

Kristen said...

Maybe you should re-post the picture from 1988 of the basket you labeled "ammo" as well. That will keep all creep's away for sure. You can do it!! I have a friend in the South (can't say where) who's husband does high level stuff for the FBI. It was his dream to do it, NOT hers to move 1200000 miles away from family and friends. You are a tough girl, you can do 2 months - easy peasy. Ps...Maximus the cake eating dog scares the crap out of me. For real.

Melanie said...

Congrats to him. You have a great looking family. I get what you are saying....we just moved to Cincy and now we are going to SC. Hubby is already gone. I am in the same boat. Good luck:)

Beth said...

How is it that after all this time I didn't even ask you what your hubs did? I am sure he is beyond thrilled with this new opportunity and I know how scary this must all be for you. You're an amazing mom and somehow you will find a way to teach full-time and mommy full-time without him. Secret weapon is adorable here by the way ;).

Congrats to your husband! My mom is a single mom. You can do it!

Suzanne@Meridian Road said...

A long time ago, back when you did the post on your big fork and spoon, I showed the post to my husband and he said "that guy's a cop." So is my husband, so I guess it takes one to know one. :) Congratulations to your husband~!

The whole single mom thing isn't fun at all, but you'll be fine! You have your dog, you have your spray paint, and you have your blog~what else could you possibly need?! Seriously, I've been in your shoes, and it's not fun, but the time passes, they come home and life is right again.

Megan // Honey We're Home said...

I'm DYING laughing at the dog picture with the cardboard box! You seriously crack me up. Congrats to your hubby and you can do it- although my hubby says never let the kids outnumber you:)

Being from a family full of law enforcement officers {my dad, my brother, my sister, my brother-in-law} I could have totally guessed just by looking that he is in law enforcement. They all have this "look". I can see it from a mile away. I should mention that I work around a lot of LE officers as well. Congrats to the hubs on the promotion! I know that's going to be super exciting for him. I wish you lots of strength and patience while he is away!!

That's wonderful! My bro-in-law was gone for over 6 mo training for Border Patrol, and my sis-in-law was left home with a new baby! I know it won't be easy, but we're on your side! :) Come up with a list of fun things to do together to pass the time. You'll do great & I know your Hubby will too! :)
Blessings,

First off, tell your husband he is "hot". (Don't be alarmed, I am old enough to be his mother but when I see someone so handsome I just have to admire them.)
You will do fine while he is gone but watch out and don't inhale too many paint fumes while you work on all of your craft projects I know you have floating around in your head.

Okay don't be depressed when reading this, I contemplated even commenting about this.. My husband has been a police officer for 6 years and a SWAT officer for the past 3. It is stressful being married to a police officer just on it's own.. SWAT is even more complicated.. the constant training..call outs.. you having to manage everything on your own when the calls come through...and the worrying..oh the worrying.. we have been married for 11 years and are currently going through a divorce.. We have a seven year old son and a five year old daughter. It has been extremely heartwrenching to go through this and we had the divorce would never happen to us mentality.. Through all the craziness looking back the best advice I can give to you (if you even want any) is COMMUNICATION is so essential and MAKE TIME FOR EACHOTHER.. we put ourselves on the back burner one too many times and we fell apart.. best of luck to you and your family.. sorry by no way do I mean fo rthis comment to break you down but to encourage you to work together..

LOL. I had to stop by and leave you a comment. I'm a military wife and my hubby is gone - a lot! In fact, right now he's been transferred to another job and is gone during the week and home 3 weekends a month until we get our house sold and moved.
I know it sucks being alone, but you can do it! Seriously. You'll wonder later how you did it WITH your hubby. LOL
Congrats to your hubby for achieving his dream job. And congrats to you for having such a funny outlook on this.
I'm here if you ever wanna whine. Just expect to be whined to from my end. :)

Congrats on your hubby's success! I feel for ya doing the single parent thing in his absence. Yeah, I sometimes want to slap myself for saying it. :)

Congratulations on his promotion. You should be proud that he was selected for that role, since it's not easy. On the other hand, I imagine that will be tough on you at home, let alone all of the worry that is involved in being on that type of team, especially when they are involved in any emergency of sorts. As for the public, they are lucky to have someone so fit to protect them. I know there are a lot of other tests that are involved before they are selected as well. Congrats and good luck.

P.S. I am a single mother of a severely disabled child and it's not easy at times.

New reader, was scrolling through your blogs and this one caught my eye. My hubby is also in law enforcement. Love it. I don't mind hearing all of the stories and whatever he can share, or is willing to share I will listen. The 4 months he was at the academy were hard as a single parent, but we did it.
It goes without saying, and I am sure that you have read the book, but " Emotional Survival for law Enforcement," is a must read! Communication is indeed key. I think what is even harder is the days when they are not on shift, and getting them to reengage into the family life can be tricky. But we are doing well, and marriage is strong.

Congratulations to your husband on the S.W.A.T. stuff..
