It’s no secret that Maximus gets the most attention from our daughter around here. Perhaps more attention than he wants.
The worry of getting a big dog while she was little quickly subsided one day when Maximus ate one of my daughter’s toys. She walked right up to him, opened up his mouth, and reached in there with her hand to get it back. At that point, we realized he was probably gonna do just fine in this family.
Here she is (in her prison attire) playing doctor. He tends to be the best patient.
Of course, he also tends to be the best butt of jokes. Broo ha ha. He has no idea.
She reads to him when they’re bored…
and she showers him with kisses—even when he’s just not that into it.
It’s not all her, however. He makes sure to stand guard whenever she eats.
Don’t judge this picture. The point is Maximus, remember?
And when she’s had enough, he just waits—hoping that she’ll look his way, and he can thump his tail loud enough to attract her over.
Of course, if he waits long enough, maybe she’ll take a nap—which means he also gets to nap. With a buddy.
Or on a buddy, as the case may be.
He’s been known to get a little jealous if someone takes his place for the night.
But she always comes back to him.
While I could do without this big lump of slobber on most days, I have a feeling she couldn’t.
Looks like he stays.

I can see this slowly happening with my daughter and our dog :)
I have a huge love for dogs and I have a huge love for this post! This is adorable. The pictures are just too cute. Thank you so much for sharing. This put a big smile on my face.
Such a sweet post!! Who says dogs are man's best friend?
I adore this! Absolutely the most precious thing I've read all day. Thanks for sharing girl!
So cute! I'm still going to need more convincing to get a dog some day when my two boys (now 3 yrs and 9 mos) start begging for one. Right now I'm content with them just having their stuffed dogs. But this post was really cute.
Sir Maximus looks well loved *emphasis on the well loved part* What a touching post..You are all very lucky to have him.As is Maximus is lucky to have you for his family.
sweet post!
He's adorable, and it looks like he is your daughter's best friend! My daughter wants a dog so bad, I may have to show hubby this and maybe he will break down.
How utterly adorable. Big fur kids are great. I have 2 little fur kids, and miss my big one. Thanks for sharing. Oh, I love your dining room table and chairs, didn't notice much else. ;-)

What a beautiful montage about a girl and her dog, so adorable they are together!
SIGHHHHH, DARN RIGHT PRECIOUS! So enjoyed this post. P.S. love that you are real and I love the pic. of the duct tape, whole in sock HA HA HA, messy table project. Hey your a mom it happens to the best of us. MERRY CHRISTMAS! Jen
Life would be boring without a Nemesis, anyways. My personal nemesis could be eaten by yours as a snack, but is kept around for the same reason(s)
My personal nemesis helped herself to the cord on the base of my new cordless kettle sometime late last week, much to my consternation. I do take some small consolation in the fact that it was plugged in, so she gave herself a little 'aversion therapy' with that one. Hopefully that will be the last cord she munches on, ohoho.
This is the sweetest post ever! All of these pics put a big smile on my face :)

You just made my day :)
This was so sweet! What handsome dog and your daughter is a cutie. I love big dogs but we are new to the dog scene. We have a Golden Retreiver and her biggest fault is she sheds...a lot. I did not grow up with a dog. I think I missed out. Your kids are very lucky to have Maximus! Merry Christmas!
What a sweet post! Thanks for the smiles! Jenn (www.thismommyloves.com)
What a beautiful dog! I'm partial to big dogs myself. They are often very sweet - gentle giants! I'm sure he's a treasured member of your family. Great pics, thanks for sharing.
Aw, I love Maximus and I know deep in your heart you do too! What a sweet post Chris. I grew up with two collies and they were my most loyal friends. Can't imagine life without a doggie in it!
I LOVE him and am so glad he lives at your house, and not mine! He's just adorable. I love that one photo where it looks like he's going to eat the kids' homework. and that last photo is just priceless.
Sweetest post I've read all week. :)
Such a beatiful story of your daughter and her best friend! What sweet pictures, and I know she will come back to this post over and over again when she gets older, just to remember this time.
LOVED this post and could totally relate to it since we used to have a Newfoundland named Tank, LOL. Giant breeds are extra special, especially with kids! He is GORGEOUS, BTW!
I came out of my reader just to post a comment about how flippin' cute this is!! I especially love the 'jealous' picture
What a GREAT post!!! Girls really love their doggies!!! I know I love mine! And your girl and her doggie are a adorable!!
Love this post! :)
There is something about little girls and big dogs that breeds sweetness. We have our own big, furry bag o'drool and he and my daughter are just smitten with each other.
And you try to be tough, but deep down, we know you love him too :)
to me this is your post yet, my daughter is sitting right next to me reading it and wishing she had a best buddy too, but i'm just not ready for one just yet...your daughter is absolutely gorgeous..have a merry christmas!!

I love this post....they are too cute together.
Such a sweet post! So cute!
This is so adorable, and it gives me hope that this crazy little puppy we have will some day turn into a great companion and not just a little ball of energy who likes to bite and pee on the floor... Very very very cute post. I love it.
I love my dog, too. Such a sweet post!
Such a cute post! So glad that other bloggers have "real" homes, and kids (with holes in their socks). Makes me feel so much better about the holey (not sure that's a word) socks around here! M.
What a lovely post :)It`s beautiful to see their friendship.
He is a really big dog :)
Aww. . . okay, so maybe you don't have a soft spot for Maximus. But you have a double soft spot for that darling girl of yours, so he's approved by association.
What darling photos!
As I type with my own dog on my feet, I love this post! Love, love, love it. I bet he'd follow her to the ends of the earth and what could be better than that?
this was way too adorable. you should print this up and put it in her room
Aww I love it. This is exactly how my late dog was treated!
He is so handsome!!! How great for your daughter to have such a loyal companion!
That last picture looks just like a man I know. I'm serious!
Even though you're not crazy about him, I'm glad to see that you can still see how precious he is to your daughter:)
Aww! What a big, sweet boy!
What a sweet, sweet post! We too are the owners of a very large dog (Great Dane) and a 7 year old little girl so I can completely relate. LOVED every single word and picture!!! PRECIOUS! =)

This is one of the sweetest posts ever!
Oh wow, this is so endearing. It made my heart smile all the way through.
Ahhh this is precious! I love all the pictures of them together! I love my three dogs (almost) more than my husband! They really are man's (or women's) best friend! Always aiming to please you...love your pics!!
aww!! I love it! My 2 year was insistent that our boston terrier play tea party with her tonight :)
ADORABLE!! Love that face.
That is so sweet, my daughter and our 70 pound lap dog are the same way. It's amazing at the bond children make with their pets. I have a roll of tape laying around also, mine is masking tape though. I use it to label and date all leftovers that I put in the fridge. It keeps you from guessing....
I love this post- so precious. Thank you for sharing this. I love big, sweet dogs and cute kids.
I love this! Just as it should be : o )
Melt my heart, these pictures are precious! I just want to give that sweet boy a hug too.
he has the funniest look on his face in the last picture! I have the same feeling about our aussie... I know my son will have a BFF forever, even though she drives me bonkers! She loves him and lets him SQUEEZE her and pull her hair and then she comes right back for more "LOVE"....
I love your dog! My daughters wants one but we don´t live in the countryside, we live in a big city and in a flat and my husband doesn´t want animals at home for the moment! so....
big kiss
Oh my gosh, how sweet! What a wonderful bond they have developed! Beautiful!
Seeing these pictures made me realise that I want my fur babies near my skin baby as long as possible..
Your dog and daughter are both gorgeous..
And it's one of the best posts I've ever read! Thank you!
It's not even 7:00 a.m., and I'm laughing like a crazy lady: "What hole? I don't see any hole. Huh." (Snort more coffee...). Hysterical. What a great way to start the day -- thanks, dear!

Those pictures are so great ... that's a friendship she'll always remember. We just had to put our dog to sleep on Monday and we're all wishing we could have a few more doggy cuddles.
Love this post!! Love it. Merry Christmas to you and your lovely family!
We also have a big dog and 2 small girls. One day our dog Hank ate a grahm cracker that my then 2 yr old had left on the coffee table all day. As soon a hehad the whole thing in his mouth she went over before I could stop her and took it out of his mouth and ate it herself! I don't really ever worry about them now, they are best friends. michele
What an interesting, sweet and loving post about your daughter and Maximus. It kept my attention all the way to the end. Very cute.

He is just beautiful! Our daughter has the same relationship with our Labrador Retriever. Dogs rule! Well, except when they're digging up your yard...
Oh, I love it. Love the expressions Maximus makes.
What a very sweet story to share, her reading to him - besteal my heart. him jealous at the sleepover, cracked me up! Their luv for each other is a gift, and I'm glad to have to shared in the story. Warmed my heart today.

that is the cutest post I have seen in a long time - just love dogs & their mini-masters! xoxo
Absolutely adorable! LOVE all the pics! That's one lucky dog! (And girl!)
So sweet. When I was little I had a boxer named Bruno who was the same way with me. We played dress up together and he would let me ride on his back, but he was also very protective and slept in my doorway every night. Brings back old memories :)
Love it! Our dog is sad because my daughter is out of town for a few days with my husband. He mopes and has surrounded himself with her toys and a dress of hers that needs to be washed. I am not a dog person but I love him for all that he does for her.
I mean.. why did this post get me all teary-eyed? SO sweet! I just love dogs & the amazing way that they love us.
xox Merry Christmas!
Adorable!!
That is just too adorable!!
My 4 year old also has a big dog, an 80lb Bulldog that just loves her to death. Boogie has had hersince she was 2 and just walking. They read together, snuggle on the couch and ever now and then I find Tickle sleeping with her in her little toddler bed. I love that such a big dog is so gentle wtih her.
Your daughter is very lucky to have such a great furry friend. Super cute post, it made my afternoon.
Too cute!
P.S. I think Maximus would look good on a canvas.
Just read this to my husband showing him the pictues as I went - we both were cracking up. Reminded me of the If you give a mouse a cookie kind of writing, thanks for the laughs.
Oh but he is such a handsome Nemesis! I love this post so much. Isn't Olivia just the most adorable little granddaughter! Wow your pictures are so clear, it almost feels like your right there. I have always loved Maximus, as long as he lives with you. HE HE HE...
Love Mom
"I want more...!" My co-worker emailed it to me because she knows how much I adore dogs. After reading it, I forwarded a copy to myself at home. Beautiful little girl, beautiful dog. Happy Holidays to all of you.
Oh my gosh! I have a Maximus too, albeit a smaller one, but he looks like a mini version of your Maximus. It is his Mini Me: http://marthalilian.tumblr.com/post/1542886439/happy-fourth-birthday-buddy-youre-the-bestest
Love seeing the pictures of your Maximus and look forward to many more. He looks like an absolute mush.
I have never really been a dog person, but your post makes we want to find a Maximus for our home. The love between Maximus and your daughter and so precious. Such a neat friendship.
You're so clever. This post was just darling!!!
I have to confess...that dog is one of my favorite parts of your blog...too funny!
So glad to start my day off with a HUGE smile reading this post.
You are truly blessed (as is Maximus.)
This is one of the most precious posts I have ever read. Simply adorable. Both of them. You should make this post into a photobook. LOL Too. Stinkin'. Cute! :)
Visiting from the Lettered Cottage and came across this post. Love the connection between your daughter and her dog. I smiled through the reading and also could commiserate with you on the big hole in your yard.
May you and yours have a Happy New Year and I look forward to returning to your blog again and again.
